My 1st #bookcrush: Brandon Birmingham. Captain of the high seas, renegade, and dashingly handsome man who's uber-protective of his precious Heather. Oh, how I wanted to be her! #1972steamyromance #woodiwissforever 😍

Deblovestoread This was my first “bodice ripper” back in the day. 😌 2mo

marleed Following an all-night reading of my dad‘s copy of the Exorcist (snuck the book - thus the all-night reading!), this was my second venture into grown-up reading. I was obsessed with the story! 2mo
dabbe @Deblovestoread I still have my copy! With the good parts highlighted in yellow. Yeah, I was that kind of teenager. 😂 2mo

Pickpick

Quoted as the first genre romance, I was excited to read this. It far exceeded my expectations, and kept me engaged from start to finish. I can definitely say this book is not going to be very romance readers cup of tea; it has a boat load of rape. No pun intended. #historicalromance #classicromance 140/100 books.

Pickpick

Yes, there are some problematic things going on here in regards to rape and consent, but this takes place in 1799 and being a woman without means meant that extremely difficult choices had to be made in order to survive.

I couldn't stop reading.

There's murder, secrets that shouldn't have been kept, and conflict that ultimately leads to romance.

My book club should have a good discussion on Monday.

"Somewhere in the world, time no doubt whistled by on taut and widespread wings, but here in the English countryside it plodded slowly, painfully, as if it trod the rutted road that stretched across the moors on blistered feet."

dabbe OMG! My absolute favorite book of hers! I still have my tattered book from 1970s! 💜🖤🧡 6mo
jdiehr @dabbe I am reading it for Romance Book Club and am thoroughly enjoying it 😊 6mo
dabbe @jdiehr Though nowadays the domineering male trope can be a bit much, but never in a romance story that takes place in the 1700s! I think it's the 1700s. 🤣 6mo

I still have my threadbare copy from the 70s. What I found out from good ol' Wikipedia: “Known as the first modern 'bodice ripper' romance novel, the book revolutionized the historical romance genre. It was also the first full-length romance novel to be published first in paperback rather than hardback.“

Who knew? I'll have to go back and read the good parts (y'all know what I mean). 🤣

Leftcoastzen A blast from the past! 13mo

LeahBergen Oh, this one makes me think of my Mom! I read it as a young teen and passed it on to her. She loved it and we talked about the characters for years. I should reread it as an oldie. 😆 13mo
marleed Omg - I saw this title float by and a rush of junior high (as it was called in my day) memories floated by. This is the only title I recall in the collection of books we catholic school kids read on the sly. We had hallway lockers but no locks so we‘d read then pass the book to the next locker. And this was my sex education ;) 13mo

dabbe @LeahBergen Woodiwiss was a favorite of mine. I also read SHANNA and THE WOLF AND THE DOVE, but FLAME is by far my favorite. 😄 13mo
dabbe @marleed This one was more acceptable to my mom than FOREVER was by Judy Blume! Can you believe it? We passed FOREVER around the same way you did FLAME. Our intro to the so-called world of romance! 🤣❣️😊 13mo

I know this is an old book with problematic tropes for today's reader, but I wanted to read it anyway to get a historical perspective on modern romance writing. But I can't get past the first 50 pages. Maybe someday I will pick it up again, but for now, nope.

CoverToCoverGirl I love this book and have read it several times. That probably dates me but I do enjoy vintage historical romance alongside with today‘s contemporary version historical romance too. (edited) 5y
ScientistSam @CoverToCoverGirl I can totally see that. I've enjoyed some vintage romances too. Just wasn't feeling it today I guess. 5y
LibrarianRyan I read all her books in high school. I loved them. But I don‘t think I would enjoy them now. 5y
ScientistSam @LibrarianRyan different times, different moods, different culture all make the experience different for rereads for sure. 5y

Excited to get into my first ever "bodice ripper" and discuss how the genre (and women) have changed with my book club this February! ❤️ #romantsy

MamaGina I enjoy a good historical romance. I think you'll find that often the heroines of these are ahead of their time, not content to follow the rules and often breaking them in surprising and, dare I say it, feminist ways!💖 7y
Jokila @MamaGina oof, not this one lol. I like a bit of Sarah MacLean for that, but this was before the anachronistic heroines. Heather does pretty much nothing but get pushed around 😬 7y
MamaGina Oh boy, too bad, thanks for the warning!😏 7y

EloisaJames Oh no--that's a really old book now... 7y
Jokila That's why I'm reading it! 😉 @EloisaJames I want to learn about the early days through this and Sweet Savage Love 7y
EloisaJames @Jokila the cultural moment is everything when it comes to sex -- I was really surprised by how much it no longer worked. You're going to have a great discussion! 7y
