12 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
He fought for Washington, served with Lincoln, witnessed Bunker Hill, and sounded the clarion against slavery on the eve of the Civil War. He negotiated an end to the War of 1812, engineered the annexation of Florida, and won the Supreme Court decision that freed the African captives of "The Amistad." He served his nation as minister to six countries, secretary of state, senator, congressman, and president. John Quincy Adams was all of these things and more. In this masterful biography, award winning author Harlow Giles Unger reveals Quincy Adams as a towering figure in the nationOCOs formative years and one of the most courageous figures in American history, which is why he ranked first in John F. KennedyOCOs Pulitzer Prizeuwinning "Profiles in Courage." A magisterial biography and a sweeping panorama of American history from the Washington to Lincoln eras, UngerOCOs "John Quincy Adams" follows one of AmericaOCOs most important yet least-known figures.

America has had incredible national leaders and John Quincy Adams ranks among the finest. Who would have thought that his rise to fame will come after and not during his presidency? His enduring legacy came during his time in the House of Representatives. Harlow Giles Unger synthesizes a phenomenal biography of the former president with some materials drawn from his correspondences with his family members and his personal diary.

I had a remarkably good reading month! With the exception of 2 stars for Pride & Prejudice & Mistletoe, I really liked everything. 5 Stars to The Immortal Irishman and John Quincy Adams. (Sorta loosely grouped from fave —> less so; left —> right.) I would‘ve probably given Radium Girls five stars too, but it made me cry too much! #monthinreview #novemberbooks #novemberinreview

Listened to this on Audible. I felt it was a good introduction and overview of a major American historical figure that I knew very little about. His presidency turned out to be the least interesting segment of his life (IMO). Rather, it was his career in Congress that fascinated me. This book has me wanting to read more about him.

A great biography on a very interesting man. Groomed from birth to be a scholar, gentleman, and leader of his country by his very august parents, John and Abigail Adams. This book covers his years as child, diplomat, President, Congressman and abolitionist. It does not have much information regarding the rift between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson or the prolonged enmity between Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams. Very readable.

Pretty good intro...yes? Those Adams' did not let any grass grow under their feet...

Julsmarshall Wow! I need to read up on that guy 😉 He has been completely off my radar. If only someone would write a fantastic musical of his life-that is really my preferred method of learning history 😄 7y
Nebklvr @Julsmarshall I haven't been to see Hamilton but hear it is fantastic. I am enjoying this book very much--very interesting and well written. 7y
Nebklvr @Julsmarshall P.S. His dad and mom were pretty interesting too!! 7y
