SHORTLISTED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL IMPAC DUBLIN LITERARY AWARD 2015 LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD 2014 Someone begins on the stoop of a Brooklyn apartment building where Marie is waiting for her father to come home from work. It is the 1920s and in her Irish-American enclave the stories of her neighbours unfold before her short-sighted eyes. As the years pass Marie's own history plays out against the backdrop of a changing world. This is the story of one life in all its devastating pains and unexpected joys; its bursts of brilliant clarity and moments of profound confusion. Fragments of a curious childhood, of adolescent sexual awakenings, of motherhood and, finally, old age are pieced together in this resonant tale of an unremarkable, unforgettable woman.

Perspective of time raised this from a so-so read back in 2014 to a full on pick in 2023! Beautiful writing - a fragmented story of one woman‘s life growing up in 1940‘s Brooklyn. Quiet and lovely♥️

My friend asked me to cover for her this coming Sunday as the moderator of our synagogue‘s Seniors Bookclub. Seems like a fun idea. I read this book ages ago but I‘m in need of a re-read….glad it‘s only 232 pages 😊As moderator, the synagogue gifted me a copy of the book 🙌🏻

Suet624 I read this book ages ago as well and I can‘t remember anything about it. 13mo

I picked this book to fulfill a challenge category (book with one word title) as I get closer to completing a reading challenge... and I'm so glad I did. It's the story of Marie, an average person growing up in Brooklyn... just your average someone who comes of age during WW2. McDermott then takes us into her married life and widowhood.

I cannot resist the bargain section of Barnes and Noble 😬
First I was like, I'll just get something for the kids. Then I was like, I don't read enough nonfiction. I need a nonfiction book. Then I just threw my hands up and decided to treat myself 😁

Happy Friday! #bookhaul #treatyoself #treatyoshelf
