Stag's Leap
Stag's Leap: Poems | Sharon Olds
In this wise and intimate new book, Sharon Olds tells the story of a divorce, embracing strands of love, sex, sorrow, memory, and new freedom. As she carries us through the seasons when her marriage was ending, Olds opens her heart to the reader, sharing the feeling of invisibility that comes when we are no longer standing in loves sight; the surprising physical bond that still exists between a couple during parting; the loss of everything from her husbands smile to the set of his hip; the radical change in her sense of place in the world. Olds is naked before us, curious and brave and even generous toward the man who was her mate for thirty years and who now loves another woman. As she writes in the remarkable Stags Leap, When anyone escapes, my heart / leaps up. Even when its I who am escaped from, / I am half on the side of the leaver. Oldss propulsive poetic line and the magic of her imagery are as lively as ever, and there is a new range to the musicsometimes headlong, sometimes contemplative and deep. Her unsparing approach to both pain and love makes this one of the finest, most powerful books of poetry she has yet given us.

These poems relate to the dissolution of her 30-year marriage when he husband leaves her for another woman. Most of the poems are of the pining sort, which left me wondering where was the rage and self-doubt and all the other emotions that surely must come from such a huge upheaval in life. 3⭐️

Catching up on 2019 reads....

When the poet's husband left their long marriage, she coped with the loss through her poetry. Olds is a powerful writer and, even though the concept of this book is a bit stale, she makes it feel fresher and finds ways to capture some of the most intangible parts of her pain.

Palimpsest Hmm, Stag‘s Leap is the name of a wine too so I was thrown for a second by this book title. 4y
Thndrstd @Palimpsest actually it was their favorite wine which is where the title comes from. She got permission to use their logo for the cover 4y
Palimpsest @Thndstd Thank you for sharing that info with me. The book looks interesting. I enjoy poetry as well. 4y

I loved this collection of poems expressing grief over the end (due to adultery) of a marriage which had lasted more than thirty years. While the poems verbalize very specific personal moments, they convey the pain and loss with which most people can identify and empathize even if they haven't experienced divorce.

A visceral poetic account of dissolution of the author's marriage and her subsequent acceptance of this. It takes more bravery than I can imagine to let readers see your soul naked like this. A phenomenal work. Even if you're ambivalent about poetry you'll find something that speaks to you here.
