We're All in This Together
We're All in This Together | Amy Jones
20 posts | 8 read | 19 to read
A woman goes over a waterfall, a video goes viral, a family goes into meltdown -- life is about to get a lot more complicated for the Parker family. Like all families, the Parkers of Thunder Bay have had their share of complications. But when matriarch Kate Parker miraculously survives plummeting over a waterfall in a barrel -- a feat captured on a video that goes viral -- it's Kate's family who tumbles into chaos under the spotlight. Her prodigal daughter returns to town. Her 16-year-old granddaughter gets caught up in an online relationship with a man she has never met. Her husband sifts through their marriage to search for what sent his wife over the falls. Her adopted son fears losing the only family he's ever known. Then there is Kate, who once made a life-changing choice and now fears her advancing dementia will rob her of memories from when she was most herself. Set over the course of four calamitous days, Amy Jones's big-hearted first novel follows the Parkers' misadventures as catastrophe forces them to do something they never thought possible -- act like a family.

Meaw_catlady @Megabooks I‘m doing okay. I think I‘m still sort of in shock with everything that is going on. How are you my friend ? 4y
Megabooks @Meaw_catlady coping. I‘m worried about my dad continuing to work. There‘s nothing I can do about it. I‘m kind of a fatalist so I don‘t feel I have a lot of control over other people‘s actions, so I‘m just sleeping and reading like usual. 💕💕💕 4y
Meaw_catlady @Megabooks sending peace and positivity your way! You can always make suggestions but in the end it‘s the other persons decisions. Who knows they might mandate older people to stay home. It has happened in a couple states. No matter what don‘t give up hope! Sending love 💕 4y

I think almost every family is dysfunctional in its own way and telling these stories is what literature is for. So even though I think almost any book could work here, I chose this novel that I read this past summer and really enjoyed for its quirky portrayal of a dysfunctional family that is drawn back together and thrown into disarray when the matriarch goes over the local waterfall in a barrel. #photoadaynov16

The Parker family is one hot mess. But aren't all families in at least one way or another? Jones does a wonderful job with tensions and frictions in family, the things that go unsaid and bubble just below the surface, and the different ways people are never fully known to others. Kind sensitivity shown in charting Kate's - the Parker family matriarch - path

Random fact about me: pink and green is a colour combination I just don't enjoy (when Bee was a baby, I never bought anything in these colours. Apologies Lilly Pulitzer!) However, it does make for a fun #bookphotochallenge for #augustofpages. Sadly, I only seem to have a few pink books, but bonus points for cat photobomb?

TheSpinecrackersBookClub Definitely bonus points for the kitty and a great story to go with your books 8y

My first ever stats! Not too shabby, considering two exams and a solo road trip with my 9 year old daughter (which meant I did all the driving). Looking forward to seeing what August offers.

All families are crazy in their own ways. Some are crazy on the internet. A funny and poignant story about a family brought together by in fighting, viral videos, dementia, and sharks.

I cannot recommend this book enough! A totally dysfunctional family trying to come to grips with an unspoken diagnosis, everyone struggling independently with their own issues, everyone making ill founded assumptions causing more strife. I can not believe it is not real

marita I follow her on Twitter! Very much looking forward to this one. 8y
Gleefulreader I adored this book! It is such terrific summer reading, too, in the best kind of way - light enough to read poolside, but still plenty to think about. 8y
mcctrish @Gleefulreader you are totally bang on with that statement 8y

Very enjoyable dysfunctional family tale. Told from the perspective of several characters, it illustrates how how even our closest family members may not truly understand us, and how one person's actions can appear completely different to another person. Minor quibbles but overall a wonderful story.

Tamye I just finished this while on vacation. I thought it was really good. I thought the story was much more relatable than The Nest. 8y

"If this were a movie..." A recurring theme Jones uses throughout the book, and one I'm quite enjoying. So, to use that motif: if this were a movie, they couldn't possibly stage a better view.

Amy Jones takes family drama to a whole new level. Family chronicles are never my go-to reads, but this one was amazing. This novel is funny, angering and heartbreaking. It was family. In all it's batshit glory.

In all this time, it has never occurred to him that they were lucky - or how someone ... might look at them and see not dysfunction but beautiful, crazy chaos.

I love this line. Perfectly describes how we fail to view our own situation and family. It also perfectly describes this novel.

"It's actually Thunder Bay," Finn says. "Completely different bay." They all stare at her blankly. To them, "up north" means "cottage country," and anything beyond that is like another planet.

- Being born and raised on that other planet, I'm hooked. So excited for more!
