15 posts | 30 read | 16 to read
Once, in a cottage above the cliffs on the Dark Sea of Darkness, there lived three children and their trusty dog Nugget. Janner Igiby, his brother Tink, their crippled sister Leeli are gifted children as all children are, loved well by a noble mother and ex-pirate grandfather. But they will need all their gifts and all that love to survive the evil pursuit of the venomous Fangs of Dang who have crossed the dark sea to rule the land with malice and pursue the Igibys who hold the secret to the lost legend and jewels of good King Wingfeather of the Shining Isle of Anniera.Andrew Peterson spins aquirky and riveting tale of the Igibys extraordinary journey from Glipwoods Dragon Day Festival and a secrethidden in the Books and Crannies Bookstore, past the terrifying Black Carriage, clutches of the horned hounds and loathsome toothy cows surrounding AnkleJelly Manor, through the Glipwood Forest and mysterious treehouse of Peet the Sock Man (known for a little softshoe and wearing tattered socks on his hands and arms), to the very edge of the Ice Prairies. Full of characters rich in heart, smarts, and courage, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness presents a world of wonder and a tale children of all ages will cherish, families can read aloud, and readers groups are sure to discuss for its layers of meaning about lifestrue treasure and tangle of the beautiful and horrible, temporal and eternal, and good and bad.

Peterson's strength is in his characters - they are endearing and relatable. the silliness that I disliked so much in this book came out in the narrator's voice and the naming conventions. at least for me, epic fantasy vibes just cannot be combined with silliness and absurdity. I have heard that the series gets progressively better, so maybe I'll pick up the other books at some point in the future.

Randomly found the animated show this book is based off of and liked the first episode a lot. Then found out it‘s a book series and jumped on it. It‘s geared for younger children but anyone who like fantasy style books will love this. It‘s a really good. The animated show is on an app called Angel Studios.

Happy Friday, friends! 🎉 I have a three day weekend starting today, and I am really looking forward to getting so much reading done! 📚💕 This is the first book in The Wingfeather Saga, a middle grade fantasy series I keep hearing wonderful things about. I took a chance on it and bought the box set of all four books, so I hope it's good! 😃

It's gorgeous at the park today! 🌿

I‘ve enjoyed Andrew Peterson‘s music, with its well-crafted & moving lyrics (& Tolkien references!). So I was interested to read his MG fantasy series. And I liked this! It‘s a fun adventure story with some gorgeous scenes & a lovely focus on a close-knit family. It has a few too many silly names & gross-out bits for me—that might appeal more to its target audience! The ending was a bit obvious, but I liked it enough that I‘ll continue the series.

Made my first trip out to B&N today since the pandemic started. I have had a gift card burning in my wallet and so I snagged these little beauties! I‘m excited to read them. The cover art is gorgeous.

Also I absolutely HATE B&Ns new layout. At my store the scifi-fantasy section is shoved in the back corner. The manga has been downsized along with MG books in kids and the overall look is horrible. But hey YA was ridiculously increased 😑

Bookgoil My mom loves this series!! 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The layout in my local B&N store is awful! It's like a maze that you can't easily browse through. I don't think any of the sections have reduced space, but it's all different alcoves of shelves which to me seems to make it harder to distance if it was busy. Luckily both times I've been inside so far there were only a few other customers. 4y
Sweetkokoro @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Yes it‘s like a freaking labyrinth inside now. My sister and I kept running into other shoppers and random corners and dead ends. It‘s not user friendly at all. There was literally nothing wrong with the old layouts. 4y
phantomx @Sweetkokoro That's interesting. There does seem to be new B&N stores popping up in different states--I think in MD and FL so far this year. 4y

I highly enjoyed this book because of the characters. Each character was so different, yet they all came together to tell such a cool story. This is the second time reading the book, and I found that I learned so much more that I had the first time. This novel has such an exciting plot that really takes the reader on a journey. I rate this book an 8/10 and I can't wait to reread the rest of the series.

I attempted to read this aloud to my 8 year old son last year, but I believe he was too young for it. And I was getting tripped up on the funny words. I switched to audiobook this year and it was awesome. The story is gripping and funny and the emotions, particularly between the siblings, are very real and relatable. I could see what was coming in terms of The Big Secret, but that didn‘t ruin it. I‘m eager to read the others. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Had several friends rave about the book and the series so we got the series for our son as part of his Christmas. Honestly, when we first started I was underwhelmed and unimpressed, but there is a point where you realize there's a story under the story and before you realize it you've been sucked in. The characters develop nicely and the plot is the one all ages can enjoy. Our whole family is excited for the next in the series.

This book started strong but finished weak. I do appreciate that the author finally explained all the missing parts of the story, but there weren't any surprises. I did very much enjoy the random footnotes, those are quite funny.
