Proud Highway
Proud Highway: Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman, 1955-1967 | Hunter S. Thompson
15 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
Here, for the first time, is the private and most intimate correspondence of one of America's most influential and incisive journalists--Hunter S. Thompson. In letters to a Who's Who of luminaries from Norman Mailer to Charles Kuralt, Tom Wolfe to Lyndon Johnson, William Styron to Joan Baez--not to mention his mother, the NRA, and a chain of newspaper editors--Thompson vividly catches the tenor of the times in 1960s America and channels it all through his own razor-sharp perspective. Passionate in their admiration, merciless in their scorn, and never anything less than fascinating, the dispatches of The Proud Highway offer an unprecedented and penetrating gaze into the evolution of the most outrageous raconteur/provocateur ever to assault a typewriter.

We are all alone, born alone, die alone, and—in spite of True Romance magazines—we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely—at least, not all the time—but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.

Let us toast to animal pleasures, to escapism, to rain on the roof and instant coffee, to unemployment insurance and library cards, to absinthe and good-hearted landlords, to music and warm bodies and contraceptives... and to the "good life", whatever it is and wherever it happens to be.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!

Leftcoastzen @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Well I think if you really like an author , letters let you see a different side of them and can give insight into their process. 6y
LeahBergen Yes, please - the Sylvia Beach ones. 😄 6y

Curious question: For those who read and enjoy Hunter S. Thompson; are his books ones you can read straight through from beginning to end, or do you have to stop after awhile and take a break? I'm just curious because I have to take a break occasionally and remind myself that this was a man whose ashes were shot out of fireworks after his funeral. (Also, not sure if this quote is from this book or just something he said.)

stargazerblue49 It has been a long time since I read Fear and Loathing, but I'm pretty sure that I read it straight through. But that book is like a train wreck - can't stop because you can't wait see what he's going to do next! 😂😂😂 7y
haileybean @stargazerblue49 I've been trying to read Kingdom of Fear for maybe 6 months. I pick it up, enjoy what I read, but have have to take a break from the crazy. 7y

I'm afraid of nothing and I want nothing. I wait like a psychopath in a game of dodge-ball: breathing quickly while the fools decide which one will throw at me next, and jumping aside for no reason except that I like being in the middle. Why not quit altogether and lie down outside the circle?

#recommendsday I know that HST is an acquired flavor for some but I absolutely adore him. I read this book 2 yrs ago and I keep coming back to it over and over.

Need to read more HST. (h/t Unknown Brewery in Charlotte for the inspiration)

elamm Ugh. I despise Hunter S Thompson. 8y
jeff @elamm - How come? 8y
elamm I must confess I've only attempted "Fear and Loathing... " and I didn't finish. I found the morality flawed to the point I couldn't bear to read another page. Perhaps I just don't get it! 8y
jeff Elizabeth - I hear you on that. I found Fear and Loathing to be a wild ride and was curious to see how he captured other events "gonzo style." 8y
thepaulhoa He's number one of all-time. 8y
