How the Light Gets In | Katy Upperman
12 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
Since her sisters tragic death, seventeen-year-old Callie Ryan has basically given up. Her grades have plummeted, shes quit her swim team, and she barely recognizes the people her parents once were. When she returns to her aunts run-down coastal Victorian one year after Chloes death, Callie resigns herself to a summer of guilt and home renovations. She doesnt expect to be charmed by the tiny coastal town or by Tucker Morgan, a local boy brimming with sunshine. But even as her days begin to brighten, Callies nights are crowded with chilling dreams, unanswered questions, and eerie phenomenon that have her convinced shes being haunted. Will Callie be able to figure out what her sister is trying to communicate before its too late?

#LMPBC Great pic by our #GroupI! The supernatural element was a nice touch to this story about grief. “There is a crack, a crack in everything. That‘s how the light gets in.” -Leonard Cohen

Y‘all, I‘m a hot mess! @TheAromaofBooks your book is going into the mail tomorrow, sorry it‘s so late. @DanaManiac I got your book the other day. Can‘t wait to dive in to see all y‘all‘s comments. @robinb

@persephone1408 the book will be in the mail tomorrow!

TheAromaofBooks It happens!! I tend to be a little lax with the last book anyway since the next person doesn't have a “deadline“ for reading it! 2y

Hello #groupi

Thoughts on these choices? My first choice would be How the Light Gets In, but I have these others also chilling on my shelf begging to be read. If none of these work I have more!

Loved the spooky (magical realism?) aspects of this book. One of my favorite book tropes is B & B‘s at the beach. I love books like that. Throw in a tragedy and hot guy. I really enjoyed this book.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

How the Light Gets In is, on the surface, a sweet teen summer romantic mystery...but under the surface Upperman explores serious issues such as grief, family, and clashing values.

See the rest of my review in the comments.

JackieSmith Callie is on the cusp of womanhood and, since the death of her younger sister the previous summer, has questioned everything she believed was true about her life. She used to think that she'd go to college. That she might be falling in love with her cute new neighbor. That she'd find value and worth in her swimming accomplishments. That her family was unshakeable. Now she's unsure about all of those things. 5y
JackieSmith The central questions for every characters are “How can I go on when I've played a role in such a traumatic event?“ and “What does it mean to grieve what was, what could have been, and move forward into a new and uncomfortable 'normal'?“ #teachersoflitsy
