Hero of Our Time (with an Introduction by George Reavey)
Hero of Our Time (with an Introduction by George Reavey) | Mikhail Lermontov
Mikhail Lermontov's pioneering psychological novel, "A Hero of Our Time," is probably his most impactful work, one which influenced the works of other great Russian authors such as Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy. The novel's narrative is the story of Pechorin a young officer in the army whose story is told in five non-chronological parts. Drawing upon his own experiences in the military, Lermontov creates a fascinating anti-hero in Pechorin, a man who is intelligent, calculating, manipulative, emotionally unavailable, arrogant, cynical, nihilistic, yet also sensitive. The principal accomplishment of "A Hero of Our Time" is the introduction of the Byronic anti-hero to Russian literature, a departure from the traditional idealized protagonist of the Romantic period which signifies a pivotal move towards the realism of the Modernist literary movement. As Lermontov describes in his preface: "A Hero of Our Time, my dear readers, is indeed a portrait, but not of one man. It is a portrait built up of all our generation's vices in full bloom. You will again tell me that a human being cannot be so wicked, and I will reply that if you can believe in the existence of all the villains of tragedy and romance, why wouldn't believe that there was a Pechorin?" This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and includes an introduction by George Reavey.

This was so much more entertaining than I expected. Especially after my teen found me a Russian Literature Bingo board. I'm not sure if Lermontov invented all of these tropes, but he definitely set the tone for later Russian literature. And he managed to pack all of this into a barely 200p. travelogue that's also filled with nature descriptions from the Caucasus region. Add to that the first literary depiction of a game of Russian Roulette -see B2

2. Aquarius - but I really do not believe in astrology
3. Mikhail Lermentov: specifically Hero for our time- a mates recommendation which sent me down the hole of Russian and Classical literature
4. Not sure I know anyone on Litsy well enough to tag them. I may not believe in Astrology but know I am an introvert

Oh, you 19th century Russian authors! You never fail to deliver a dark tale with lots of deep philosophical musing.

My soul has been warped by the world, my mind is restless, my heart insatiable ; nothing satisfies me; I grow accustomed to sorrow as readily as to joy, and my life becomes emptier from day to day.

Lermontov was 26 when he died duelling. Yet he writes like a man who knows the world (more specifically the Caucasus) and who knows his way with women. Fighting boredom is the main theme of this book and by fighting it Petsjorin, the hero, gains respect from his fellow travellers and soldiers and gains the love of the women he meets. Liked it a lot! #1001books

As we drift further away from the conventions of society and draw closer to nature we become children again, whether we want to or not: the soul is unburdened of whatever it has acquired and it becomes what it once was and what it will surely be again.

My #funfridayphoto: I was assigned to read this book not once, but twice in college. Each time was a revelation.

shawnmooney I was, too. Unlike you, I don't think I ever got around to actually reading it! :-) 8y

The book which started me reading things other than history and sci-fi fantasy. The narrator tells of his encounters with a young officer called Pechorin, a handsome, intelligent young man seemingly with world at his feet, yet with a history as a rake and wastrel, a man who only comes alive through

Oblomov26 Experiences, mostly bad experience. A man constantly seeking the next adventure even if it takes him to an early death in the Russian east. Interesting to note that Lermontov himself was army officer who died young fighting a duel against a fellow officer. 8y
akfreeborn Very interesting personalities. Fabulous book. I just read it a year ago, and it has sent me down a path of exploring more Russian classics. I can't get enough of them now! 8y
Oblomov26 @akfreeborn Same - a friend lent it to me many years ago and when I gave it back and commented that it was really good he response was "they are called classics for a reason". Which lead me down the Russian path. 8y
