Dead Man Walking
Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States | Helen Prejean
10 posts | 17 read | 2 reading | 8 to read
In 1982, Sister Helen Prejean became the spiritual advisor to Patrick Sonnier, the convicted killer of two teenagers who was sentenced to die in the electric chair of Louisianas Angola State Prison. In the months before Sonniers death, the Roman Catholic nun came to know a man who was as terrified as he had once been terrifying. She also came to know the families of the victims and the men whose job it was to executemen who often harbored doubts about the rightness of what they were doing. Out of that dreadful intimacy comes a profoundly moving spiritual journey through our system of capital punishment. Here Sister Helen confronts both the plight of the condemned and the rage of the bereaved, the fears of a society shattered by violence and the Christian imperative of love. On its original publication in 1993, Dead Man Walking emerged as an unprecedented look at the human consequences of the death penalty. Now, some two decades later, this storywhich has inspired a film, a stage play, an opera and a musical albumis more gut-wrenching than ever, stirring deep and life-changing reflection in all who encounter it. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I‘m joining @monalyisha in offering up some books for a #booktrade.

Post your own stack of books you‘d like to trade, use the hashtag, and comment here if you‘re interested in any of these. Then I‘ll take a look at your stack and see if we can make a trade. (US only for me I‘m afraid due to shipping costs.)

Hooked_on_books I‘d like Opioid, Indiana! I‘ll post a stack tomorrow, since it‘s late here now. 😉 3y
monalyisha Work was busier than expected today. Post office trip has been bumped (slightly) to Thursday! I‘ll tag you when it‘s en route! 📦 3y

Hooked_on_books You‘re welcome! Open it whenever it strikes your fancy. Exciting that you‘re going to New Orleans. I haven‘t been there in a couple decades. (Wow, that sentence made me feel old!) 3y

#ScitFiSeptember #Predestination

Not sure if this book really fits the theme, but it does deal with Catholics and how some people are damned while others are saved.

Klou Either way it sounds like an interesting read! 4y

Pickpick

I just finished this for book club. We were supposed to find a book that had been made into a movie. This book was honest and deeply moving. I have a lot of respect for Sister Helen and her work.

She has a point here. Who are "they" or we to say who dies?

I‘m proud to call myself a Delawarean tonight....Our legislators, and Governor are on the way to abolishing the death penalty in our state. This is pretty awesome. It‘s good of the state financially and morally.

I hate the movie tie-in cover of this book but I'll live with it for now. The book itself is a priceless account of the moral and spiritual consequences of the death penalty in the United States.
Helen Prejean lends a #helpinghand in the form of spiritual advice and counsel that she provides to Patrick Sonnier, a convicted killer on death row.

"We need art to open up the heart and bring us to places we are never going to go."
- Helen Prejean

I will see mezzo-soprano J'nai Bridges (photo above) performing the role of Sister Helen Prejean at the opera tonight.

If we believe that murder is wrong and not admissible in our society, then it has to be wrong for everyone, not just individuals but governments as well.

DaphneLee Love this book. Read it more than twenty years ago and it has stayed with me since. 8y
