A stunning, atmospheric police procedural set against the grit of Inverness and the raw beauty of the Scottish Highlands, this is the first book in the DI Monica Kennedy series. Sixteen-year-old Robert arrives home late. Without a word to his dad, he goes up to his bedroom. Robert is never seen alive again. A body is soon found on the coast of the Scottish Highlands. Detective Inspector Monica Kennedy stands by the victim in this starkly beautiful and remote landscape. Instinct tells her the case wont begin and end with this one death. Meanwhile, Inverness-based social worker Michael Bach is worried about one of his clients whose last correspondence was a single ambiguous text message; Nichol Morgan has been missing for seven days. As Monica is faced with catching a murderer who has been meticulously watching and waiting, Michael keeps searching for Nichol, desperate to find him before the killer claims another victim. From the Shadows introduces DI Monica Kennedy, an unforgettable new series lead, perfect for fans of Ann Cleeves' Vera, Susie Steiner and Peter May.

A great debut Scottish Noir novel. The story was riveting and the characters were well developed. I had one quibble, the Main detective is a tall woman and the author keeps discussing how absurdly tall she was & how she kept wearing shoes and crime scene gear one size too small which made me sort of feel like the author didn‘t like her. I feel like unlikeable characters are wonderful but if the author doesn‘t like them, how can I?

CoffeeK8 Also, he has the detective purposely choose to use a plain rubber band to put up her hair which just seemed odd. 4y
audraelizabeth I only use a rubberband if no hair elastic is available 4y
CoffeeK8 @audraelizabeth me too, but she‘s like “cool I love these for my hair” and I just imagine the constant hair ripping 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick A writing choice definitely made by a man with short hair! 🤣 4y

The highland setting is dreamy but stark, highlighting the horror of the crimes against the backdrop of beautiful nature.
The end has lots of twists, some of which are fairly expected, and some of which were genuinely surprising. I found that by the end Monica was a less believable character, but I found found her very likeable anyhow. I found the villain's motivations highly interesting, and I would have liked even more insight into him.

When bodies of young boys start showing up on the rural banks of lochs in the highlands, detective Monica Kennedy gets obsessed. The case brings her back to her old stomping grounds and a whole world she had worked to forget.

This is book One in the series and it's a great beginning to the series. I really enjoyed the story and the twists and turns of the plot. The ending was good and finished the story well. It's quite a dark story but I liked that and wasnt sure who the killer was until close to the end. I really liked Monica until the bit with her daughter coming along that frustrated me though.
