When the Astors Owned New York: Blue Bloods and Grand Hotels in a Gilded Age
When the Astors Owned New York: Blue Bloods and Grand Hotels in a Gilded Age | Justin Kaplan
4 posts | 2 read | 15 to read
In this marvelous anecdotal history, Justin Kaplan--Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer of Mark Twain--vividly brings to life a glittering, bygone age. Endowed with the largest private fortunes of their day, cousins John Jacob Astor IV and William Waldorf Astor vied for primacy in New York society, producing the grandest hotels ever seen in a marriage of ostentation and efficiency that transformed American social behavior. Kaplan exposes it all in exquisite detail, taking readers from the 1890s to the Roaring Twenties in a combination of biography, history, architectural appreciation, and pure reading pleasure

Mehso-so

The writing of this was a bit bland, but it was still a somewhat interesting story of the Astor family and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. It also talked about some of the Astor properties in England. #ReadingThroughTheYears192021 #2006

This is what the TBR Jar picked for me to read next. I started it yesterday and I'm about halfway through. It's not as interesting as I'd hoped, but I'm going to finish it because it's a short book. #coffeeandabook #TBRJar
