To Be Sung Underwater
To Be Sung Underwater: A Novel | Tom McNeal
10 posts | 7 read | 29 to read
Judith Whitman always believed in the kind of love that "picks you up in Akron and sets you down in Rio." Long ago, she once experienced that love. Willy Blunt was a carpenter with a dry wit and a steadfast sense of honor. Marrying him seemed like a natural thing to promise. But Willy Blunt was not a person you could pick up in Nebraska and transport to Stanford. When Judith left home, she didn't look back. Twenty years later, Judith's marriage is hazy with secrets. In her hand is what may be the phone number for the man who believed she meant it when she said she loved him. If she called, what would he say? TO BE SUNG UNDERWATER is the epic love story of a woman trying to remember, and the man who could not even begin to forget.

I can deal with unlikable characters, but in this book they got more unlikable as each chapter unfolded and I found nothing to redeem them. Every character is in a weird spot where they think they are superior while simultaneously feeling like everyone else feels superior to them. The final act of the “first love” was so selfish. I don‘t understand those who call the book romantic. Some decent writing, but not enough to save it for me.

Do you like well-written novels that take you through the lives and relationships of relatable, flawed characters? Do you enjoy beautiful imagery and realistic-seeming emotional depth? Are you old enough to look back and wonder 'what if' you had made different choices? Are you ok with having your heart broken slowly?

If yes, consider this book.

I may not have read this if not for my need for a Nebraska book for #readingroadtrip

I knew nothing about this book before I unpacked it from its box at the bookstore I was working at in 2011 but between the cover and the lyrical title, I had to read it. It turned out to be the perfect book for me at that exact moment in my life. #marchintoreading #judgedbythecover

"The man sits hidden among the pines on a bluff overlooking the grid of farms and country roads lying north.
Don't let this tame opening sentence fool you. This is a novel about family and choices and first love and it gave me all the feels. Loved it.

slhbooks I liked this one too. I remember I picked up just because I loved the title and cover📚📚📚 9y

I'm a bit torn, because while I loved a lot of parts of this book, I admit that reading 436 pages without a more definitive ending was a bit of a letdown. That said, some beautiful prose and a lot of great characters. It's a romance gone awry novel.
