This was fascinating from a historical perspective and a quicker read than I initially expected. I appreciated the introductory essays describing the history of this ancient story. The story itself is interesting but becomes even more so as you consider it in comparison to other mythological stories.

Have to teach this epic this year, so I finally made time to read it. Now I have to figure out how to make it enjoyable.

Addison_Reads I enjoyed this recent translation. I had never read Gilgamesh previously. The essays with it I thought did a great job of helping connect things I didn't see while reading.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest know narrative story - it was first inscribed in clay tablets over 4000 thousand years ago. Although the style in which it is written can feel foreign, there's nothing foreign about the deep relationship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu or the despair Gilgamesh feels when his friend dies.

What to say about one of the first texts of human kind? Such texts are beyond Good/Bad, Enjoyed/Did Not Enjoy. There are already so many religious symbols to find, that are used in many other cultures. I'm glad to have read this one.

Buechersuechtling I read this one many, many, many … many years ago (28-30 years ago). There‘s a copy lying around here, again, and you remind me of having had the wish about 1,5 years ago to pick it up and re-read it again. Maybe I should, but I‘m a bit afraid that I now don‘t like it anymore. 🥺 (edited) 3y

1. According to GR, A Charlotte Mason Education by Catherine Levison (104 pp), but I don't completely trust GR page counts.
2. The Lord of the Rings (1,216 pp as one volume). See note on GR page counts above.
3. Meditations of the Heart by Howard Thurman (printed 1953). Epic of Gilgamesh is older (c2100 BCE) but I don't have an original printing (inscription?) of that one.
4. Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo (Oct 2019)

Scochrane26 I don‘t trust GR page counts either because it depends on the edition. I think what I listed was accurate though as far as shortest & longest. 4y

ljuliel I‘ve not read LOTR ,but I‘ve seen those combo- books where all the stories are in one book. It‘s huge ! 4y

ImperfectCJ @Scochrane26 I might just not be adept at sorting on GR. When I look at the Stats section, it lists PK Dick's The Minority Report (which I read in 2009) as 103 pp, but it didn't show up when I sorted my "read" shelf by page number. ? Oh, well. Not a huge deal. 4y

ImperfectCJ @ljuliel I wasn't sure whether to include the big volume, but as Tolkien apparently wanted it published that way originally, I felt justified. 🙂 (Second-longest is The Stand at 1153 pp.) 4y
