The Paradise War
The Paradise War: Book One in The Song of Albion Trilogy | Stephen Lawhead
10 posts | 23 read | 11 to read
"When I opened my eyes, I was no longer in the world I knew." Lewis Gillies is an American graduate student in Oxford who should be getting on with his life. Yet for some reason, he finds himself speeding north with his roommate Simon on a lark--half-heartedly searching for a long-extinct creature allegedly spotted in a misty glen in Scotland. Expecting little more than a weekend diversion, Lewis accidently crosses through a mystical gateway where two worlds meet: into the time-between-times, as the ancient Celts called it. And into the heart of a collision between good and evil that's been raging since long before Lewis was born. First published almost twenty years ago, The Song of Albion Trilogy has become a modern classic that continues to attract passionate new readers. Enter into The Paradise War and experience the dazzling brilliance of a world like ours--yet infinitely bolder and brighter: a place of kings and warriors, bards and battles, feats of glory and honour. It is a place you will forever wish to be. It is Albion.

I'm surprised by how well this stands up to me being an adult now. I guess it kinda makes sense; my mum loved it too, as an adult.

I need to look up the Nudd/Ludd thing. As far as I remember they're thought to be one and the same character, in real mythology?

So far, this has surprisingly not been visited by the suck fairy? I'm not as absolutely thrilled by it as I was as a teenager, but it's pleasant nostalgia!

Okay, I've decided to try it. I remember the opening chapters so well, it feels almost like I could recite it. I don't like either Simon or Lewis, as an adult, but they also make more sense to me as an adult!

I am so tempted to reread this, but could it possibly match up to my teenage nostalgia...?

I went "shopping" on my own bookshelves today. ? These were books I had left at my parents' house, and want to read or reread soon. I loved The Paradise War trilogy as a kid, I do hope it hasn't been visited by the suck fairy.

Relaxing on my balcony with some fruit (cherries and plums! 🍒) and books. I just paid my last ever school bill for my upcoming final semester of grad school. I graduate in December with my Masters in Library and Information Science. Feeling super anxious because I am broke AF but also feeling thankful thinking about how far I've come. 💕

Jennick2004 Way to go!! Btw your fruit looks amazing!! 5y

Got about 100 pages in and couldn‘t take it anymore. When I have to be told—through pages of info-dump—why the thing that needs to be saved is of paramount importance, my mind checks out. Maybe I‘m missing out on an amazing series, but I couldn‘t stand it any longer.

Perfect storm of things is causing me to be overwhelmed and on the edge. Taking lunch to read a little and go to the used book store down the street for some retail therapy. I forgot how much I enjoy Lawheafd- maybe I'll see if the store has some.

LauraBrook Is this part of a series? I've only read the first two of the Robin Hood trilogy, and I really like them! What else would you recommend? 7y
Cinfhen Marshmallow musketeers?!? Yum😋 7y
BethM Right @Cinfhen - my coworker had them! @LauraBrook this is the first book in a trilogy- its excellent so far. I've also read his Pendragon trilogy which is excellent and apparently will be stacking the Robin Hood one lol. I'm into fantasy, even better if it's Arthurian or Celtic, and he has at least one other Celtic trilogy I'm going to look at, but the store only had book 2 and 3. 7y

LauraBrook @BethM Good to know, thank you! I've just started reading SF/F more on the last couple of years, so even though I might know authors or titles, I don't have a reference point at all. Will be checking out more of his stuff for sure! 7y
BethM @LauraBrook that's my preferred genre so hit me up with questions! 7y
BethM Also I stand corrected Pendragon had 5 books. 7y
LauraBrook @BethM I will - hope you don't regret offering! 😉😉😉 7y
