In this white-knuckle thriller from the internationally bestselling author of the "apocalyptic extravaganza" (Publishers Weekly) The Hatching series, a family moves into a home equipped with the world's most intelligent, cutting-edge, and intuitive computer ever--but a buried secret leads to terrifying and catastrophic consequences. After two years of living on cheap beer and little else in a bitterly cold tiny cabin outside an abandoned, crumbling mansion, young programmers Shawn Eagle and Billy Stafford have created something that could make them rich: a revolutionary computer they name Eagle Logic. But the hard work and escalating tension have not been kind to their once solid friendship--Shawn's girlfriend Emily has left him for Billy, and a third partner has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. While Billy walks away with Emily, Shawn takes Eagle Logic, which he uses to build a multi-billion-dollar company that eventually outshines Apple, Google, and Microsoft combined. Years later, Billy is a failure, beset by poverty and addiction, and Shawn is the most famous man in the world. Unable to let the past be forgotten, Shawn decides to resurrect his and Billy's biggest failure: a next-generation computer program named Nellie that can control a house's every function. He decides to set it up in the abandoned mansion they worked near all those years ago. But something about Nellie isn't right--and the reconstruction of the mansion is plagued by accidental deaths. Shawn is forced to bring Billy back, despite their longstanding mutual hatred, to discover and destroy the evil that lurks in the source code.

This book was different then I was thinking it would be. It took me a couple chapters or so to really get into reading it, but once it got interesting to me I couldn‘t put the book down. It was creepy, weird, cool and I absolutely loved it. The were a few times I was extremely shocked at the language the character used, but I can see why it was used. It was extremely creative. I got some major the shining vibes from the novel and I loved it.

Book 1 is done for #Scarathlon2020! @StayCurious #TeamHarkness 16pts.
#Screamathon #CYOReadathon

This was better than I was hoping for! Definitely for fans of Black Mirror. Basically it's what happens when ghosts and tech and haunted land and bad family blood all come together. Also, creepy but cool twins. Shades of The Shining, but that could just be the creepy twins/alcoholic husband vibe. Great start to my October!

My favorite month is here and I'm ready for all the books, all readathons, and all the eeks and shrieks! @Sace
Kicking off my #CYOReadathon by finishing up this haunted tech tale, which fits #TeamHarkness for #Scarathlon2020 too. I really wish I could just take the month off from work!

I guess I‘m reorganizing my books today 😐 I have put two in my discard pile, and it hurts but I know I will never read them. I‘ll just keep telling myself it‘s okay 😂 not like getting rid of two will push me over the edge.

Cortg You‘ll completely forget about them in a year 😉 4y

🎧 hmmm what can I say ... this book is a mixture of AI, family secrets, software engineering, murder, ghosts, love & The Shining. A character actually mentions REDRUM and there‘s supernatural twins. It was kind of slow & if you‘re not into a Gates VS Jobs storyline ... the story may bore you silly. It picks up around 2/3‘s into it but it‘s definitely an acquired taste? I liked it but I‘m a bit of a nerd. ⭐️⭐️⭐️2/3.

Yet another book I had high hopes for, but Boone could NOT deliver & I cannot help wishing I could get the hours I wasted reading this back. I'm not sure I've ever read a novel with so much unnecessary repetition & lack of plot advancement. Roughly 300 pages in things finally started happening, but those events were poorly developed so it was impossible to become emotionally involved or simply entertained. Big fail!

⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Mansion is sort of a high-tech, Rose Madder meets The Shining. The first few chapters were long but extremely descriptive. I felt the story started to really take traction after Emily and Billy agree to move into Shawn's next-generation, childhood home. Nellie makes a decent protagonist, however, I was left wanting a bit more.

Rating: 💀💀

Way too slow, way too focused on a lover‘s quarrel.

I was not a fan of this book. It‘s categorized as horror but there was absolutely nothing scary about it. I can see this being science fiction. The story drug and I found it super boring.

Billy and Shawn started building a computer program years ago in a cabin beside a haunted mansion. Billy left with Emily and Shawn started a company and become a multimillionaire. Shawn wants to start a new project with a program that him and Billy started years ago. He has to talk Billy into taking the project as well as Emily. And they are to live in the mansion that Shawn has rebuilt.
I loved this book. It is my favorite of the year.

I really enjoyed this well paced book. The Nest and Eagle Logic were well done and fascinating, my favorite part of the book. Look for this early Dec 2018.
Thanks to Emily. Bestler Books/ Atria for this e-ARC.
