The Girl from Berlin
The Girl from Berlin: A Novel | Ronald H. Balson
22 posts | 15 read | 36 to read
In the newest novel from internationally-bestselling author Ronald. H. Balson, Liam and Catherine come to the aid of an old friend and are drawn into a property dispute in Tuscany that unearths long-buried secrets An old friend calls Catherine Lockhart and Liam Taggart to his famous Italian restaurant to enlist their help. His aunt is being evicted from her home in the Tuscan hills by a powerful corporation claiming they own the deeds, even though she can produce her own set of deeds to her land. Catherine and Liams only clue is a bound handwritten manuscript, entirely in German, and hidden in its pages is a story long-forgotten... Ada Baumgarten was born in Berlin in 1918, at the end of the war. The daughter of an accomplished first-chair violinist in the prestigious Berlin Philharmonic, and herself a violin prodigy, Adas life was full of the rich culture of Berlins interwar society. She formed a deep attachment to her childhood friend Kurt, but they were torn apart by the growing unrest as her Jewish family came under suspicion. As the tides of history turned, it was her extraordinary talent that would carry her through an unraveling society turned to war, and make her a target even as it saved her, allowing her to move to Bolognathough Italy was not the haven her family had hoped, and further heartache awaited. What became of Ada? How is she connected to the conflicting land deeds of a small Italian villa? As they dig through the layers of lies, corruption, and human evil, Catherine and Liam uncover an unfinished story of heart, redemption, and hopethe ending of which is yet to be written. Don't miss Liam and Catherine's lastest adventures in The Girl from Berlin!

This is a light pick for me. While the story was good and engaging the writing left a lot to be desired. It is also apparently the 5th in a series. It didn‘t seem to matter as far as the storyline goes but would have been nice to know before reading.

We travel from present-day Italy and back to the 1930‘s during Hitler‘s regime in Germany.

A very absorbing dual-timeline that will immediately capture your interest with detailed descriptions of the characters and events.

Historical fiction fans, opera fans, and fans of Mr. Balson‘s books definitely will not be disappointed in his newest beauty.

I've always wondered how the international Red Cross overlooked the concentration camps. According to Balson, Theresienstadt was the cover-up whenever a nation wanted to investigate. His books are always so informative and he finds ways to connect obscure facts to today's times.

I struggled a bit w/the alternating story lines at the beginning of the story as it was hard to get invested in either story line. However, once we got to the meat of both stories, I became immersed in them.

Alternating between WWII &present day, we read of Ada, a talented violinist &German Jew, &the latest case of Liam &Cat-a land dispute in Italy.

Balson does a great job at slowly unraveling both stories &then bringing them together.

2🌟. I thought this was poorly written. “ her dress was as smooth as milk”. Really. The story was somewhat intriguing, but not enough. #meh

I‘m trying this audiobook. It‘s had mixed reviews. I‘m not terribly enamored yet.

LeafingThroughLife I was kind of lukewarm on this one. Ultimately I liked the story but I wasn‘t in love with the writing. 5y
Samplergal @LeafingThroughLife I think that is it exactly. I do want to know about the land deal though. I‘ll likely finish. 5y
Butterfinger I have been waiting for this one to come out. I've enjoyed all his books so far. It is a part of a series. Do you think that is the trouble, maybe? 5y
Samplergal @Butterfinger it certainly could be! I had no idea. Lol. 5y

After reading Once We Were Brothers and The Girl from Berlin, Ronald H. Balson has become one of my favorite authors. Review will be tomorrow. I‘m regretting for not keeping Once We Were Brothers. Both of these books are heck a lot better than Nightingale, and All the Light We Cannot See!!

I meant to just read the first chapter of this tonight, but I‘m a hundred pages in and don‘t want to stop. Historical fiction that moves back and forth in time from World War II in Europe to the present day, Balson is a master at creating suspense and developing his stories.

This book was excellent. It jumps from current day in Italy to Berlin during the reign of Hitler. You are reading a memoir of Ada Baumgarten and trying to figure out how it connects to the current day.
If you like fiction set during World War II and earlier then you will enjoy this novel.

Told in a dual timeline, TGFB is the story of Gabi, a 78 year old woman in danger of being pushed out of her Tuscan home by a large corporation vying to steal her prize winning vineyards and Ada, a gifted young Jewish musician and the prejudice and horrors she faced as a young woman during WWII. I love how Balson combines modern day mystery with historical fiction and once again he successfully merges present with past into a fantastic read.

I just finished THE GIRL FROM BERLIN by Ronald H. Balson.

It was FANTASTIC.

Dual timeline - 1930‘s Germany to present day in Italy.

The connection was a journal written by the main character who was a famous violinist.

My full review will be on October 8.

♥️ ♥️ LOVED the book. ♥️ ♥️
