Where the Peacocks Sing
Where the Peacocks Sing: A Palace, a Prince, and the Search for Home | Alison Singh Gee
6 posts | 1 read | 8 to read
How far would you travel for love? In her sparkling memoir, journalist Alison Singh Gee learns that love, riches, and a place to call home can be found in the most unexpected places. Alison Singh Gee was a glamorous magazine writer with a serious Jimmy Choo habit, a weakness for five-star Balinese resorts, and a reputation for dating highborn British men. Then she met Ajay, a charming and unassuming Indian journalist, and her world turned upside down. Traveling from her shiny, rapid-fire life in Hong Kong to Ajay's native village, Alison learns that not all is as it seems. Turns out that Ajay is a landed prince (of sorts), but his family palace is falling to pieces. Replete with plumbing issues, strange noises, and intimidating relatives, her new love's ramshackle palace, Mokimpur, is a broken-down relic in desperate need of a makeover. And Alison wonders if she can soldier on for the sake of the man who just might be her soul mate. This modern-day fairytale, WHERE THE PEACOCKS SING, takes readers on a cross-cultural journey from the manicured gardens of Beverly Hills, to the bustling streets of Hong Kong and finally to the rural Indian countryside as Alison comes to terms with her complicated new family, leaves the modern world behind, and learns the true meaning of home.

A Palace, a Prince and the Search for Home. A memoir that reads like a rom com at times. Allison Gee,from LA with Chinese roots, has dreams. She is a journalist who moved to Hong Kong to work for Time Inc. where she meets Ajay from the India branch. She is a glam queen and he is a Gandhi loving, simple man. Sparks fly. And then the reveal,Ajay is a sort of Prince with a family(albeit dilapidated)palace in India! #booked2023 #titlestartswithw #mttbr

Cinfhen This sounds really interesting 😁 12mo

“His whole life was an experiment with truth,” Ajay said. For Gandhi, Ajay told me, it was how you lived your life, not what you hung on your walls. That—and not the Armani Casa mirror— was the best reflection of your soul.”

Not book related but too cool not to share! My husband captured this amazing snap of a peacock that wandered onto our property today. Looks like he‘s admiring the flowers. 😆 Hopefully he‘ll stick around awhile!

Look who I spotted on an early morning #audiowalk today...

This is Peter the Peacock who arrived in the neighbourhood quite a few years ago and has never left. He used to chase the bus up the road when he first arrived, but soon got bored of that. Sometimes he‘s a bit vocal when the sun comes up at 4am, but we just put up with that!

Smrloomis 😂 Was he someone‘s pet? Or are there wild peacocks in some places? I really want to know how he ended up there! 5y
Kaye That‘d be strange to live someplace where peacocks were walking around like chickens on a farm ! What sort of noise do they make ? That‘s funny he used to chase the bus. Sorta like dogs that chase cars. What would they do with it if they caught it ? 5y
Hooked_on_books Well now. That‘s unusual! 5y
squirrelbrain @Smrloomis - they‘re sometimes kept at stately homes in the UK, as pets I suppose, but no-one knows where Peter came from. Apparently some people, about 1/2 mile from here, leave their shed doors open and feed him, particularly in the winter. 5y
squirrelbrain @kaye - difficult to explain the noise, kind of a screeching / cawing but very LOUD and not particularly pleasant! 😬 5y
Smrloomis Interesting, thanks! 5y
Velvetfur Aaww he's so beautiful! I love peacocks so much ❤️ Have you seen him open his tail yet? 5y
blank He's gorgeous! We have crazy turkeys in my neighborhood that chase the mail trucks sometimes. But they're not nearly as pretty and they're kind of mean! 5y
squirrelbrain @Velvetfur - I haven‘t seen him open his tail recently, only a few years ago. He‘s a much bigger bird than he was when he first arrived (he was a bit scrawny!) so I imagine his tail will be wonderful now... 5y
DivineDiana How curious and wonderful! 💙💚 5y
Dolly I wonder why he‘s always late for the bus!! 😂 5y
Zelma Peter the Peacock and his troubles with the bus sounds like a children‘s picture book in the making! 5y

Honestly the author sounds like a spoiled brat and it makes it such a hard read - so unrelateable like seriously who cares what brand your towels are
