When Francesca Lia Block‘s Weetzie Bat was published in 1989, it was more than beautifully written... it was progressive in its content! It explores identity, sexuality, addiction, and AIDS, and is a celebration of transcendent love, acceptance, and inclusivity. I welcomed author/illustrator Maia Kobabe to my podcast to discuss this gem of a book further! We chat about queer themes, cancel culture, and found family. Link to listen in bio!

Lyrical, ephemeral, and fable-like. Magic and love and their hearts‘ desires drop in and out of the characters‘ lives. I can see the appeal of Weetzie Bat and company, but it‘s not for me. The book broke ground in 1989 for its depiction of #lgbt characters who don‘t end tragically, and its treatment of AIDS (never named in the book). Reading it in 2018, though, I can‘t get over the repeated casual Native appropriation. #ya #yaclassics

"But love and disease are both like electricity, Weetzie thought. They are always there--you can't see or smell or hear, touch, or taste them, but you know they are there like currents in the air. We can choose, Weetzie thought, we can choose to plug into the love current instead."

My #WCW is Francesca Lia Block. Her YA books always have kick-ass females. Her writing is truly magical. I've read her books over and over and over and I've given away so many copies of Weetzie Bat to people that I used to keep six copies in the house at all times. If you've never read anything by her, try something. She writes some pretty hot adult erotica, too! 😜

shelf-devoted I loved her stuff in high school (and a bit beyond) but haven't read any in years! Must be time for a revisit. 8y
Britafish Weetzie Bat!! FLB is amazing, she was very important to me in high school. 8y
readinginthedark I read I Was a Teenage Fairy in high school and liked it, but it didn't strike me the same way when I re-read it later. What I'm really interested to read is her Curse Workers series! 8y
thesaurusrex Yes!! I blew through everything of hers they had at the library when I was in high school. Loved it 8y
BookishFeminist She sounds awesome! I've never read her stuff but will definitely fix that w your awesome rec. 👍🏼😊 8y

weetzie bat is all 'surprise!' bright colors, large text, and YA genre aside. weetzie is so loveable, but the genie and the grandma under the sand roof-plus all the other, out of nowhere characters- make this book worth it. plus, a loving tribute to an old hometown for any former LA native
