Laconic, sharp and playful, 99 Nights in Logar is a stunning coming-of-age novel and a portrait of Afghanistan like no other, from an unforgettable new voiceMe and Gul and Zia and Dawoud out on the roads of Logar, together, for the first time, hoping to get Budabash back home before nightfallIt is 2005 in Logar, Afghanistan, and twelve-year-old Marwand has returned from America with his family for the summer. He loses the tip of his finger to the village dog, Budabash, who then escapes. Marwand's quest to find Budabash, over 99 nights, begins. The resulting search is an exuberantly told adventure, one that takes Marwand and his cousins across Logar, through mazes, into floods and unexpected confrontations with American soldiers. Moving between celebrations and tragedies, Marwand must confront family secrets and his own identity as he returns to a home he's missed for six years. Deeply humorous and surprisingly tender, 99 Nights in Logar is a vibrant exploration of the power of stories - the ones we tell each other, and the ones we find ourselves in.

If had to describe this book in one word it would be 'irritating' - in two, I'd add 'pretentious'. The author can write well enough & there's a story, more or less, somewhere in there but boy, does he revel in alienating his reader.

1. Too many indistinct characters. Too hard to remember names/how they're related.

2. So many Afghan language words (no glossary) that sentences become unintelligible.

3. Whole chapter in Afghan language ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi Just - why? Nobody reading this book in English will be able to read what is the crux of the story! What does this achieve? How does it enhance my reading experience? Why, author, 3y
readingjedi (Posted too soon!) Basically, I can't understand why this was done! It smacks of the kind of literary pretentiousness I can't stand. Ugh. Avoid. 3y
PurpleTulipGirl I have no patience for pretentious. 3y

Just started this one - another shamefully overdue #netgalley read. The reviews are pretty lukewarm but I'll give it a go. It has lots of nice cover variations.

Mehso-so

Have you ever read a book that was probably good but you were just not in the right mood for it? That‘s how I feel about “99 Nights in Logar,” a coming of age story about one boy‘s odyssey across contemporary Afghanistan as he tries to find the family dog. I can‘t pinpoint what I didn‘t like about this book (some reviewer I am) but I just wanted it to end. Has anyone else read this? Should I give it another chance?

Tamra Yes - there are good books at wrong times! 5y

Bailedbailed

I tried to like this, I really did. I managed to stick it out until the 50% mark, and then bailed. I‘m debating how on Earth I‘m going to review this - it‘s a NetGalley book. Usually (not that it happens often), I don‘t review books I don‘t enjoy, but I‘m going to have to, aren‘t I? Does anyone have any tips as to how I go about this?

CouronneDhiver Be honest and tell them exactly what you did and didn‘t like... there‘s no shame in that. 5y
Ms_T I agree with @CouronneDhiver , be constructive but honest. 5y
