Max Perkins: Editor of Genius
Max Perkins: Editor of Genius | A. Scott Berg
Now a Major Motion Picture Starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. The National Book Award winner from Pulitzer-Prize winning author A. Scott Berg. The talents he nurtured were known worldwide: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe, and numerous others. But Maxwell Perkins remained a mystery, a backstage presence who served these authors not only as editor but also as critic, career manager, moneylender, psychoanalyst, father-confessor, and friend. This outstanding biography, a winner of the National Book Award, is the first to explore the fascinating life of this editor extraordinarein both the professional and personal domains. It tells not only of Perkins stormy marriage, endearing eccentricities, and secret twenty-five-year romance with Elizabeth Lemmon, but also of his intensely intimate relationships with the leading literary lights of the twentieth century. It is, in the words of Newsweek, an admirable biography of a wholly admirable man. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Haven't had a lot of reading time lately but I was determined to finish this excellent biography. Berg captures the humanity of the legendary editor Perkins as well as the legends he discovered: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe. The book is also provides an inside look at the publishing industry at the time. Some things have changed but much is interestingly the same.

I recently saw the film Genius and when I read in the credits it was based on this biography I had to get it. Now I can't stop reading it. Fascinating to read about how writers like Fitzgerald and Hemingway went about their work, and the lengths Perkins had to go to to convince his conservative publishing house to open up to their fresh new voices.

Just watched the movie last night and have added the book to my TBR list. Something the movie emphasized was Maxwell Perkins' great gift for friendship. He gave so much of himself in order to help his writers shine.

raelaschoenherr This movie looked good! 8y
Louise @raelaschoenherr Yes, it was a really good movie. Great cast. One learns more about Perkins, Wolfe, Fitzgerald, and even gets a little scene with Hemingway. It's a lovely movie for writers and book lovers. 8y
Readingrobin We're showing that at my library next week! And we were just talking about it before I left work! 😀 8y

TheWordJar I love this book and had no idea it was a movie! Max Perkins was truly one-of-a-kind...one of the reasons I wanted to become a book editor. You hope for such relationships between editor and author, but sadly, publishing timelines and bottom lines usually don't allow for that. 8y
Louise @Readingrobin What a fun coincidence! I think you will enjoy the movie. Colin Firth did such a fine job of portraying a quiet man with a rich inner life! 8y
Louise @thewordjar Yes! I think many of us long for the days when editor-author relationships were so rich and rewarding! I'm guessing they still exist in rare instances; but as you say, the nature of the industry today makes it difficult to establish such connections. 8y

Even going to the movies adds to my TBR list! You might not think that a movie about editing could be warm, earnest, and heartening, but Genius is. And don't worry if you're no particular fan of Thomas Wolfe's (I'm not, at all); Jude Law flies his crazy flag and Colin Firth exudes editorial love.

We're very excited that Max Perkins: Editor of Genius is being made into a film starring Colin Firth and Jude Law! Max Perkins was a brilliant editor who worked with Fitzgerald, Hemingway, & Wolfe. We're re-releasing the book with a new cover to match the film, & we're giving copies away on Twitter!

Stephanie-Anne This is sooo going on top of the TBR pile... 8y
