Some Girls Are: A Novel | Courtney Summers

Climbing to the top of the social ladder is hard--falling from it is even harder. Regina Afton used to be a member of the Fearsome Fivesome, an all-girl clique both feared and revered by the students at Hallowell High... until vicious rumors about her and her best friend's boyfriend start going around. Now Regina's been "frozen out" and her ex-best friends are out for revenge. If Regina was guilty, it would be one thing, but the rumors are far from the terrifying truth and the bullying is getting more intense by the day. She takes solace in the company of Michael Hayden, a misfit with a tragic past who she herself used to bully. Friendship doesn't come easily for these onetime enemies, and as Regina works hard to make amends for her past, she realizes Michael could be more than just a friend... if threats from the Fearsome Foursome don't break them both first. Tensions grow and the abuse worsens as the final days of senior year march toward an explosive conclusion in this dark new tale from the author of Cracked Up To Be.

This book started off so good and I fully anticipated it to be a 5 star book for me and then it ended and I hated the ending. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It reminded me of a darker version of Mean Girls. It was really well written and heart breaking to read but then it just ended so abruptly for me and I hated that part of it. Important book, but it definitely disappointed me in the last few pages.

Mehso-so

I'm used to high school dramas in #YA but this one way particularly sad. A lot of tit-for-tat payback with Anna being the stupidest of them all. She only believed what she wanted to believe even when the truth was so obvious. I felt the tiniest bit of pity for Regina, but the most for Liz and Michael. I'm surprised Liz did what she did, but at least she did. Another one down for #24B4Monday! #readathon

This was incredibly hard to read. I had this sinking uneasy feeling the entire time. Parts of it reminded me of how you would feel seeing a car accident in progress and not being able to stop it, or to help in any way. These girls are terrible. They all need psychiatric help. Lots of therapy.

Aside from what the book is actually about, it was very well written. 👍
It's always good to leave on a positive note! 🙃

Literaryunicorn Hahaha - "These girls are terrible." I think it's so weird how you can hate characters and still really enjoy something. 7y
ItsAnotherJen Lol @Literaryunicorn I know!!! The teenagers in this book are vicious. There are 1.5 characters that I liked in this story. 7y

This book was intense. It was about mean girls, blackmail, revenge... it dealt with rape and shaming. I can't go so far as to say that I enjoyed this book, but I think it was well written, and I'm going to look for another of this author's books.

Oh. My. Wow. This is my second Courtney Summers read and I've already decided her entire body of work should be required reading for teachers. She so perfectly captures the horrific things teenage girls are capable of and her novels are incredibly eye-opening and heart-wrenching. Everyone should read this immediately.

One of my professors thinks I don't have enough to read right now, so she's sending these to add to my #BookPile.

Of all the mean girl books I've read recently, these girls are probably the meanest. Quick read, kept me up late last night, and woke me up early this morning. Tough subject matter. Third book I've finished over #biblioweekend
