London 1883. Actress Lizzie Dixie drowned in the River Thames. So how was she murdered five years later in Highgate Cemetery? Intrepid Fleet Street reporter Penny Green was a friend of Lizzie's and Scotland Yard needs her help. Does Penny unwittingly hold clues to Lizzie's mysterious death? Penny must work with Inspector James Blakely to investigate the worlds of theatre, showmen and politicians to uncover the truth. But who is following her? And who is sending her threatening letters? Penny is about to discover that Lizzie's life was more complicated, and dangerous, than she ever could have imagined.

Bailedbailed

Despite every effort to enjoy this book I have failed. On one occasion I did manage to read 20 pages in one sitting but usually after about 10 or so pages the story was so tedious I would just give up. On reaching the section where the two main characters are discussing gardening, had it not been a library book I would have thrown it in the bin. After 3 weeks of frustrated reading and at less than 100 pages, I bailed.

Finished #9 in the Penny Green series yesterday, it's not in the Litsy system yet, so I can't tag the book. But was very good, one of my favs from the series. And a quick read.. I tagged the first book in the series

Pickpick

While not perfect, I enjoyed this first in the Penny Green mystery series. Set in 1880s London, Penny is a 35ish, single news reporter working to make it on her own without family help. She is asked to assist a Scotland Yard inspector (possible future love interest?) when an actress friend that she thought had drowned five years before is found shot to death in a cemetery. While I guessed part of the ending, there were a few surprises as well. 🔻

robinb While the story was a bit slow in spots and I felt the author spelled out things that were already obvious, I found myself enough engaged to be willing to try the second outing. 3.75/5⭐️

NOPE. First, it‘s ploddingly dull. The main MC is given nearly everything she needs in order to investigate with little fuss. At one point, apropos of nothing, the 2 MCs have a thuddingly polite conversation about how they both like to garden, a lot. Now, I like gardening just fine, but HELLO WE‘RE INVESTIGATING A MURDER RIGHT NOW? & that‘s all before we get to some issues with depictions of race that I personally couldn‘t ignore. Thank you, next

A good historical mystery set in Victorian London, featuring an independent woman who is a journalist who teams up with a police inspector to solve the murder of a woman who was thought to have already been dead for 5 years. I liked how the author wove historical topics, like women's dress reform and bicycle riding, into the story.

Hi all! I‘m trying to decide whether to try an historical mystery series but can‘t find any Litten reviews on here.

Has anyone read any of the books in the Penny Green series by Emily Organ? If so, what do you think?

Thanks for your help! 😊❤️

It‘s a 6-book series and the other titles include The Rookery, The Maid‘s Secret, The Inventor, Curse of the Poppy & The Bermondsey Poisoner.

Literary_Siren I don‘t know that series but if you like Jane Austin you‘ll like 5y
robinb @Literary_Siren Ooooh, I haven‘t heard of that one, Jayme! Thank you, I‘ll check it out! 👍😊 5y
Literary_Siren You‘re welcome! Also if you like steampunk this is one of my absolute favorite series 5y

robinb @Literary_Siren I actually bought that first book awhile back for two reasons: I wanted to read more steampunk; and I loved her Gardella Vampire Chronicles series (and I‘m not normally a vampire reader). 🤣👍 Have you read this series? It‘s not steampunk but soooo good! 5y
Literary_Siren I have the first two books on my kindle but I haven‘t gotten to them yet. 😬 I love Colleen Gleason! The Gardella Vampire Chronicles is the first series of hers I read. 5y
MinDea I was just about to tag you, @robinb, as someone who might be able to help 😆😆😆😆 5y
robinb @Literary_Siren Yay! I think you‘ll really like the Veronica Speedwell series! And my Scarab book has been sitting on my Kindle for awhile...I‘m definitely moving it up the list! 👍😊 I didn‘t realize that Gleason has added more to that series...I just looked and now there‘s apparently a Macey Gardella offshoot? Have you read those? 5y
robinb @MinDea 🤣🤣🤣👍 I love it, Mindy...you KNOW how much I ❤️ my historical mysteries! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Literary_Siren No I haven‘t. I just discovered them early this year. Alas, she doesn‘t plan on writing anymore Stoker and Holmes! 😩 (but I hope she changes her mind!) 5y
robinb @Literary_Siren I know what you mean...I always hate to see a great series come to an end! 😩😔 5y
Amie I have 5 of the 6 books on my Kindle, but I haven't read them yet! I was actually thinking I should read them next week when I'm off work. If I do, I'll post a review. 5y
robinb @amie thanks Amie! I got a notice about the first one being $.99 so I went ahead and bought it last night. 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄 I did check out reviews on GR, and they seemed to hover around the 4⭐️ range for the series overall. Some said it started a little weak but got better as it went along. I‘ll look forward to hearing your opinion! Thanks! 😊 5y
Texreader I love that this was the first post for this book! And that you got to read it and liked it. I may want to read it, too, depending on how the following books are reviewed. 4y
robinb @Texreader LOL...I‘m so glad that you tagged me on this! I had totally forgotten that I wrote this post! 🤣🤣 But I am glad that I took a chance on it. There are currently 9 in the series, and the lowest rated is the first one (4⭐️). So it sounds as if it keeps getting better with age. 😉👍 4y
Texreader @robinb I thought finding this was so serendipitous. When on I‘m on the fence whether to read a book I like to scroll through the earlier posts. Good to hear the books only get better. Have you read the Veronica Speedwell novels? They are very entertaining 4y
robinb @Texreader Yes, the Speedwell series is a favorite of mine! So good!! I‘m currently one behind there...I have it but haven‘t gotten to it yet. Also love the Lady Darby series! 4y
Texreader Ooh another series to check out! Cool! Thanks! 😘 4y
robinb @Texreader You‘re welcome! It‘s by Anna Lee Huber, and I also recommend her Verity Kent series as well. 😊 Happy Reading! 💕 4y
