The Black and the Blue
The Black and the Blue: A Cop Reveals the Crimes, Racism, and Injustice in America's Law Enforcement | Ron Harris, Matthew Horace
6 posts | 9 read | 4 to read
CNN law enforcement contributor Matthew Horace offers an unforgettable account of the racism, crimes, and colorlines that permeate America's law enforcement, and lays out a means for change. Matthew Horace was an officer at the federal, state, and local level for 28 years working in every state in the country. Yet it was after seven years of service when Horace found himself face-down on the ground with a gun pointed at his head by a white fellow officer, that he fully understood the racism seething within America's police departments. Using gut-wrenching reportage, on-the-ground research, and personal accounts garnered by interviews with police and government officials around the country, Horace presents an insider's examination of police tactics, which he concludes is an "archaic system" built on "toxic brotherhood." Horace dissects some of the nation's most highly publicized police shootings and communities highlighted in the Black Lives Matter movement and beyond to explain how these systems and tactics have had detrimental outcomes to the people they serve. Horace provides fresh analysis on communities experiencing the high killing and imprisonment rates due to racist policing such as Ferguson, New Orleans, Baltimore, and Chicago from a law enforcement point of view and uncovers what has sown the seeds of violence. Timely and provocative, The Black and The Blue sheds light on what truly goes on behind the blue line.

"We have consciously abandoned whole communities, and then we put police in to keep order, to keep them locked in those communities, to keep the natives quiet."

Hard to read--not the writing which is personal & accessible, but the content. Hard to read & feel hopeful about racism, police corruption & violence, lack of resources, & how our society brutalizes & betrays communities of color. Difficult, yes but necessary if change is ever to happen.

I've got a stack of 4 library books I'm trying to finish before the end of the year. This one's up first because it's due tomorrow!! I can't renew it so guess it's time for a mini readathon! I'm finding it really interesting... An insider's look at the racist culture permeating the USofA's police force.

#yearendclearout Book 1/4

LauraBeth I‘m in the same boat as you - can‘t renew them anymore and have to finish them before Dec 24th. We can do it! 💪 (this is my version of the Olympics). 5y

Written by an African-American former police officer, this book is considerate, well-researched, and very informative. The stories of abuse are enraging.

We know this, we document this, and still it is okay, somehow. I'm a college faculty member because I want to help adults. I am not a parent. Who is fighting for these kids, though?
