In 1907 a great master of human emotions was born. His birthday is today. I loved him in Uni, and continue to love him today. #poetry #englishliterature

...In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water, and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
Had somewhere to get to & sailed calmly on.

BarbaraJean I picked Auden‘s poem “Musee des Beaux Arts” for Belgium, because it discusses this painting that hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels. I love both painting and poem, especially together (even though I had to omit the middle of the poem to make it fit in 451 characters!). Can you find Icarus in the painting? 😁 (edited) 6y

batsy Me too! I love the poem so much for how it makes the painting take on a different perspective 6y

I first heard this poem in the funeral scene of "Four Weddings and a Funeral." W. H. Auden writes some of the most moving poetry ever. This is still my absolute favorite poem, despite its obvious melancholy.#poetry. #seasonsreadings2016
