marleed My favorite musical. I read the book (abridged) following my first time seeing the musical. In the book the characters are a bit less altruistic, and I can‘t tell you the amount of time I‘ve spent thinking about that. 2y

readingjedi @marleed I have been thinking a lot about Valjean's acts of mercy in contrast to Javert's devotion to justice. 2 very complex & fascinating characters. Haven't tackled the book yet bit but it's on my list! 2y

Day 5: I do love this book, but it‘s my favorite musical of all time. Tonight was my fifth time seeing it and it was the 2nd best production I‘ve seen. (First was on Broadway.)

Amen for audiobooks! I've made it into Book 3 (started early) but there's no way I'd have gotten so far without listening to it. I think I prefer the audio. It removes any guilt I feel about all the footnotes I'm NOT reading. (Anyone reading them? There's so many! 🤪)
Sometimes I wonder how editors can abridge a classic. Not so with Les Mis! 😂
I do like the book and look forward to tomorrow's discussion!

vivastory I haven't used the audio, but I'm thinking of doing so next week. The footnotes can really interrupt the narrative flow! 6y

Kalalalatja There are no footnotes in my edition! No notes either. I‘m really starting to wonder if I should have gone with a different edition 🤔 6y

DGRachel The version I‘m reading has endnotes but they aren‘t linked to the text, so I‘m ignoring them. The footnotes are based on Hugo‘s own footnotes, so I am reading those as they pop up. 6y

merelybookish @DGRachel Right! I should have said endnotes. That's what I have and it's so disruptive (and time consuming) to find and read them. 6y

DGRachel Part of me would like to have the detailed background, but it‘s already taking me more than 2 minutes to read each page. I have to be honest, though, I am sorely tempted to go out and buy another copy so I can open one to the endnotes and have them in front of me while I read. Would that be too ridiculous? 6y

vivastory I have the same edition as @DGRachel I occasionally check them, if I can't figure it out from the context, or if I'm really intrigued. 6y

susanw I have the Penguin classic edition. @Kalalalatja is that your edition too? No end notes, and very very few footnotes. I kinda wonder if I‘m missing anything, but then again, I also kind of know the story so I‘m not that worried. 6y

Kalalalatja @susanw I have the Barnes and Noble leatherbound edition. But there is no information, it doesn‘t even list who translated this edition, no introduction, nothing but the story from end to finish 🤷‍♀️ but it is working for me, so I‘m sticking with it, but it does seem a bit weird! 6y

LaLecture I‘m also thinking about skipping the endnotes. In my copy I can‘t even see when there‘s an endnote referring to the text so I‘d have to skip to the back of the book to check if there‘s something to read about this name or place mentioned on page 148 🙄. And most of the end notes don‘t really help me to understand the references or don‘t make them more interesting to me and other things I don‘t unterstand are not mentioned at all. Not helpful. 6y
