The Marriage Game
The Marriage Game: A Novel of Queen Elizabeth I | Alison Weir
In this compelling novel of Tudor drama and suspense, acclaimed author Alison Weir brings to life one of Englands most scandalous royal love affairs: the romance between the Virgin Queen Elizabeth I and her courtier Lord Robert Dudley. Only twenty-five and newly crowned, Elizabeth vows to rule the country as both queen and king. But her counselors continually press her to form an advantageous marriage and produce an heir. Though none of the suitors have yet worked their way to her throne, the dashingthough marriedLord Robert lays claim to Elizabeths heart. Their flagrant flirting, their unescorted outings, and the appointment of Lord Robert to Master of Horse inspire whispers through the court, and even rumors that Elizabeth has secretly given birth to Lord Roberts child. Events take a dark turn when Roberts wife is found dead. Universal shock is followed by accusations of murder. Despite the scandal, Elizabeth and Robert manage to navigate the choppy political, economic, and religious waters around them. But the greatest obstacle to marriage between the Queen and her true love may come not from outside forces, but from within. With intricate period detail and captivating prose, Alison Weir explores one of historys most provocative Did they or didnt they? debates. The Marriage Game maneuvers through the alliances, duplicities, intrigue, and emotions of a woman intent on sovereigntyover her country and herself. Praise for The Marriage Game Entrancing . . . I started the newish Wallis Simpson bio, but I‘m also starting the The Marriage Game and finishing Entry Island. I‘m halfway through the first Deanna Raybourn as well. I think this group will be my first week of April reads!

This was only ok to me, which kinda bums me out since I usually love Alison Weir‘s fiction! I found it to be repetitive, kind of boring, with not a lot of forward movement plot wise. I‘m glad I borrowed it from the library instead of buying.

I have always enjoyed reading historical fiction by Alison Weir, more so even than her non-fiction books. This book tells the precarious game Elizabeth I played, and of her relationship with Lord Robert Dudley. To this day I am not sure whether she won or lost that game! #marriage #noteworthynovember

TrishB I'm not a Weir fan......though the fiction is more bearable. It's funny how you just don't take to some authors. 6y
Andrew65 @TrishB I'm not particularly a fan of her non-fiction. I enjoy her fiction but not in the same league as some others. 6y
Birdsong28 @TrishB I love this era of history and I tried Suzannah Dunn I can't take to her like you can't to Alison Weir. Her writing style (Dunn) just dosen't flow for me like Weir's does, but like I say it would be a boring world if liked all the same things! 📚📖 6y
Andrew65 I read one Suzanna Dunn and struggled to get into, persevered and got better by the end. @Birdsong28 (edited) 6y
