After three years in Milan, Matteo returns home to the provincial country town where he was born and from which he had fled. Coming out as a young gay man in a provincial country town had led to ugly clashes with his conservative father, and the urban metropolis of Milan had been a welcome change from the stifling small town life of his childhood and the anger and bewilderment of some members of his family. But now, Matteo finds himself with little choice but to return home, with no money, no job, and an uncertain future, like so many other young people of his millennial generation. Afraid of encountering his estranged father, he instead takes refuge with his extended family, at a house shared by his grandmother, three aunts, and his very pregnant cousin. As he tries to rebuild his life, reconnecting with the women of his family and old hometown friends, he warily confronts a few truths about the other generations of his family--from their bigotry to their love, and tolerance, and acceptance--and a few truths about himself, including his fears of confrontation and commitment.

This graphic novel offers an interesting look at family relationships. I liked where it was trying to go with part of its key message about family and being connected through generations. The other part of the message seemed like it had good heart but was uninformed, seeming to say that we should always give our family a chance to hurt us before we detach ourselves. #lgbtqcomic #lgbtq #comic #family

I enjoyed this graphic novel about an Italian family all living under one roof in spite of many conflicts, some decades-old. The main character/narrator is a 22-year-old boy who is returning to his rural hometown after years away in Milan. He left because his dad found out he was gay, so when he returns he stays with his grandma and many other relatives in her home. It‘s about family, and growing up, and the ties between generations.

Thanks @queerbookreader for your review on this the other day. This is about a young man who runs away from his father without giving him a chance to accept him and lives in the big city for 3 yrs before coming back. Most importantly, this is about how families reconcile, forgive, forget, come together. As one who comes from a family of grudge holders this graphic black and white novel with its sparse language spoke volumes to me. Just great❤️

queerbookreader Wasn't it a great comic?? I'm so glad you liked it too! 6y
Reggie @queerbookreader it was amazing!!! Thanks again for the rec!!! 6y
Centique This looks beautiful. I‘m just a beginner with graphic novels but sometimes the art just catches me and draws me in - this looks like one of those 😍 6y
Reggie @Centique I‘m a beginner myself. Such is the beauty of Litsy. I would never have picked up graphic novels if not for this site. But yeah, this would be a great start. 6y

REAL good. I regret taking so long to read this comic. I can't really explain it but it's sort of like a coming of age comic about a gay guy who's already an adult but has family issues and his family has other issues and it's basically about multigenerational issues. It doesn't sound compelling when I explain it but I teared up at multiple parts so IT'S GOOD I PROMISE #queerbooks

This was a touching coming-of-age tale written in graphic novel format. The story especially appealed to me because it was about a big Italian family. I, personally, I came from a very small family so I really enjoyed family interactions. Good, bad, or ugly, I could relate to these people.

#2017Book174
Generations tells the story of Matteo's return to his strict, dysfunctional Italian family after his boyfriend dumps him. Now he's confronted by overbearing aunts, a sick grandmother, and a father who's ashamed of Matteo. Through the panels of this graphic novel we see Matteo grow into a more mature man, learning to apologize, forgive, and be present for those who need him. The story was great, but I didn't like the style of artwork.
