The Earth
The Earth | Emile Zola
3 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
When Jean Macquart arrives in the peasant community of Beauce, where farmers have worked the same land for generations, he quickly finds himself involved in the corrupt affairs of the local Fouan family. Aging and Lear-like, Old Man Fouan has decided to divide his land between his three children: his penny-pinching daughter Fanny, his eldest son - a far from holy figure known as 'Jesus Christ' - and the lecherous Buteau, Macquart's friend. But in a community where land is everything, sibling rivalry quickly turns to brutal hatred, as Buteau declares himself unsatisfied with his lot. Part of the vast Rougon-Macquart cycle, The Earth was regarded by Zola as his greatest novel. A fascinating portrayal of a struggling but decadent community, it offers a compelling exploration of the destructive nature of human ignorance and greed

#curiouscovers #patterns Grove Press printed these Evergreen Classics many years ago.Always liked these covers. They aren‘t dated but the address for Grove on the books predates zip codes .795 Broadway,New York 3, NY.😄Nacho has no cares, his back in this photo, no extra charge! #catsofLitsy

#riotgrams #stacksonstacks

Bit of a blank on this prompt so here is a photo of some French language books that I keep on top of one of my shelves plus a “stack” of foreign coins I‘ve been stuck with after various travels. I want to start reading more French language books as soon as I‘ve finished my #modernlibrarytop100 project.

(Missed yesterday due to going to bed early with a bad headache 😭)

Chrissyreadit I like this stack!!! 5y
Leftcoastzen Like your pretty French stack.❤️ 5y
twohectobooks @Leftcoastzen @Chrissyreadit thank you both! These are all books I acquired from various relatives. For some reason I haven‘t figured out yet, French books have their spines printed in the opposite direction to English books, so you have to lay them down on their covers to see the spines right side up. 5y
