Baby, You're Gonna Be Mine
Baby, You're Gonna Be Mine: Stories | Kevin Wilson
12 posts | 8 read | 14 to read
In Baby, Youre Gonna Be Mine, Kevin Wilsons first story collection in nearly a decade, Wilson combines his signature quirkiness with his keen eye for emotional complexity to explore the fraught relationship between parents and children. Wildfire Johnny is the story of a man who discovers a magic razor that allows him to travel back in time. Scroll Through the Weapons is about a couple taking care of their underfed and almost feral nieces and nephews. Signal to the Faithful follows a boy as he takes a tense road trip with his priest. And Baby, Youre Gonna Be Mine, the title story, is about a narcissistic rock star who moves back home during a rough patch. These stories all build on each other in strange and remarkable ways, showcasing Wilsons crackling wit and big heart. Filled with imagination and humor, Baby, Youre Gonna Be Mine is an exuberant collection of captivating and charmingly bizarre stories that promise to burrow their way into your heart and soul.

Wow, so I really like this short story collection. Wilson has a way of eliciting an unreasonable hopefulness from lives that are, viewed reasonably, hopeless. There are several stories that I think are going to stick with me, including Wildfire Johnny, with its time travel with a harsh price, and Scroll Through the Weapons, which describes a home life that is a little too close to what I grew up with.

BarbaraBB Great review! I hadn‘t heard of it but I loved 1y
ImperfectCJ @BarbaraBB Me, too! I actually read Nothing to See Here three times (once on my own, once aloud to my teens, then again as an audiobook on a family road trip), which is not my usual. Wilson has a new one out this month that I have on my TBR now. Early reviews say it's ever better than Nothing to See Here. 1y
BarbaraBB Really? I have to check that out. I read this was one too but it wasn‘t as good as Nothing to See Here 1y

Wilson trains a wonderfully subversive eye towards parenthood, and I‘m glad I gave this short story collection a second chance. It feels weird that I never drew that connection among all his work. The title story looks at parenting a former rock star. Another looked at guardianship and reminded me of the half-wild kids in Nothing to See Here. None of the stories cracked my top 10 favorites, but I enjoyed them all!

BarbaraBB Is it as good as that one about those kids combusting? 2y
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 I love your question/ reference @BarbaraBB - I LOVED that book BTW 👉🏽 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen That‘s the one! I loved it too! 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen this pre-dates nothing to see here and didn‘t have as strong an impact on me. I‘m excited about his book in the late fall! I hope it will be a #botm choice! 2y

Collection of dark humor short stories. Reminded me of David Sedaris but since it is fiction, it lacked the heart that a slightly innocent narrator brings to Sedaris' work. At times, it was too dark for me to enjoy.

These stories are dark, but I thought interesting and entertaining.

These stories are nothing like Kevin‘s fun, irreverent books, which I loved. They have none of the humor and heart of his novels. Typical mediocre literary fiction short stories. Skip. #dnf

Leftcoastzen I‘m sorry to here that .Loved The Family Fang 5y
Megabooks @Leftcoastzen I did, too! I wouldn‘t have even thought it was the same author! 5y

I hope this short story collection fits the bill! I enjoyed The Family Fang and Perfect Little World. Avoiding Family Trust this morning because of the long Fred chapter (gag 😝)!

Has anyone read Lot by Bryan Washington yet? It was a #botm pick. How was it?

I really loved this short fiction collection. It did what I think the best collections do— play on the reader‘s expectations from one story to another, to create a really cohesive reading experience.

Really enjoying this book of short stories after hearing the review on NPR. Settling in my book nook with a cuppa Yerba Mate tea on a dreary, rainy, damp day. I seriously love this weather!!!!! Happy Reading! ☔️

I love when I don't know that one of my favorites has a new book coming out and it magically manifests on my porch like a magic unicorn gift from the book gods. (OK so this is the first time that's ever happened.)
