A Darkly Beating Heart
A Darkly Beating Heart | Lindsay Smith
16 posts | 11 read | 53 to read
A troubled girl confronts her personal demons in this time-travel thriller alternating between present day and 19th century Japan. No one knows how to handle Reiko. She is full of hatred; all she can think about is how to best hurt herself and those people closest to her. After a failed suicide attempt at her home in Seattle, Reiko's parents send her to spend the summer with family in Japan, hoping she will learn to control her emotions. But while visiting Kuramagi, a historic village preserved to reflect the nineteenth-century Edo period, Reiko finds herself slipping backward in time into the nineteenth-century life of Miyu, a young woman even more vengeful than Reiko herself. Reiko loves escaping into Miyu's life . . . until she discovers Kuramagi's dark secret and must face down Miyu's demons as well as her own.

My massive Amazon book order decided not to ship on time--so it looks like this #24in48 #readathon will be mostly eBooks and ARCs.

PS this is the smallest my physical #tbr has been in MONTHS

trazo I absolutely love ❤️ The Goldfinch! Enjoy! 7y

Yes. Love the mix of history and blending it with current stories.

Bailedbailed

I started it, but just around 40 pages in and I'm going to have to bail. I was super excited by the premise, but I just... Can't read an entire book right now where every other line is the main character telling me about how angry she is and how she will "get her revenge." It's cool if you're going to have an angry protagonist, but you need to make sure the reader is invested very quickly otherwise it just gets tedious.

I'm a little older than the intended audience of this book, but while I certainly felt a little distance from Reiko's roaring emotions, I remember enough of being a teenager to be sympathetic to her. Plus for magical elements that aren't strictly western, some minuses for some flat portrayals of (modern) places (Seattle and Tokyo).

I'm getting over the huge reading slump I had last month and reading more! This is on my December TBR. It's set in 19th century Japan and deals with REVENGE. Annnddd...that's pretty much all I know about it. Lindsay Smith is one of those authors whose books I'm automatically excited for, even though I've only read on by her.

(Accidentally deleted my first review! Still figuring this out)

Very dark. Very interesting. I loved the setting and the time-travel.

It took me over a month to read this novel, and I think I needed that time to really process it. A DARKLY BEATING HEART is a story that will rip you open, leave you raw and wounded, heartscars split open. It isn't an easy story to read, isn't careful with how its emotional threads might burn, but it's cleansing at the same time, and beautifully cathartic. I'll be thinking about this book for a long time. - @angel #Recommendsday
