Apothecary Melchior and the Mystery of St Olaf's Church | Indrek Hargla
11 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
The first in a series of books that have taken Europe by storm and are soon to be filmed, featuring a chemist-turned-sleuth who battles ignorance and superstitionas well as killersin a beautiful setting and in a gripping and mysterious era of historyThe Apothecary Melchior series plunges the reader into 15th-century Tallinn when Estonia is at the edge of Christian lands and the last foothold before the East: a town of foreign merchants and engineers, dominated by the mighty castle of Toompea and the construction of St Olaf's Church, soon to become the tallest building in the world. Apothecary Melchior is a divisive figure in the town: respected for his arcane knowledge and scientific curiosity but also slightly feared for his mystical witch-doctor aura. When a mysterious murder occurs in the castle, Melchior is called in to help find the killer and reveals a talent for detection. But Tallinn has a serial killer in its midst, and Melchior is tested to the limit in a plot with as many twists and turns as the turreted castle itself. Melchior uncovers a mystery surrounding St Olaf's and a secret society that has been controlling the town for years, uncovering truths about the town that may spell danger.

Saw the St Olaf's church today. It was under construction so couldn't visit inside. Maybe next time.

One of the story locations. 😍

I loved reading about mediaval Tallinn! This reminded me a bit of Niklas Natt och Dag but was much lighter to read. I'm definitely going to read the other books in this series.

I‘m starting to think that maybe murder mysteries aren‘t for me in book form. I found this one to be a little bland and at times it was a struggle to keep reading. I also kept mixing up the characters which wasn‘t ideal in a murder mystery. I don‘t really have much more to say about it. Book 10 for #ReadingEurope2020 #Estonia @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB #translatedbooks

BarbaraBB Too bad, its cover is very appealing! 3y
lukulamppu @BarbaraBB Yeah, the cover is super nice! 3y

A visiting knight is brutally murdered in medieval Tallinn with a second murder occurring shortly thereafter. The town council is trying to sort the situation, which is solved by Poirot-like apothecary Melchior. This meandered at times and the end was a bit overly drawn out, but it was an enjoyable, lighter choice for #Estonia. Thanks to @Martta for posting about this and putting it on my radar.

Finally got my hands on this one! First in a series. A mystery set in medieval old town Tallinn. The protagonist is an Apothecary. Should be an interesting read. #Estonia

EadieB It would be very interesting to me as I can't read that language! lol 4y
Tove_Reads It‘s been translated! @EadieB (edited) 4y

The last one is a novel set in medieval Tallin. I've been wanting to read this for a long time! I was happy to find also something a bit easier because the other books were such a heavy nonfiction. 😁

I read this one for #PassportLitsy and it was a decent cozy mystery. There were parts that I figured out fairly easily, and some that I didn‘t; it was an entertaining read that included some interesting historical detail and atmosphere. #Estonia
