Eighteenth-century London the lives of the sisters Fitzgerald, Constance and Verity, become entwined with the nearby Fowler household, charged with providing safe harbour to a mysterious baby from far away. Camden, London, 2015, December 17th the lives of the sisters Fitzgerald, Constance and Verity, are consumed by the wait for this boy, who may or may not be dead. There is no way of knowing. Deep within the savage beauty of Iceland, a hidden pool grants those who drink from it endless life. For those that have, their secret must remain held close for two hundred years, but time is slipping away, and malign forces are gathering. And for those who have sipped from the pool, they discover all too quickly that immortality is no gift, because in the absence of death, true darkness emerges.

Rec request 2: For October, I would love if the book club read a lightly creepy book (none are horror fans, sadly). Tagged one has been on my TBR since @Centique reviewed it. Here are some others I‘ve read that I‘m considering suggesting. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Centique The Parentations is so good! As long as they don‘t mind some elderly characters having to come to terms with mortality. Angela Carter‘s The Magic Toyshop is also nicely creepy but perhaps a bit more chaotic and darker than The Parentations. Or The Western Wind is great. A mystery in a 15th century village told backwards. I think “lightly creepy” might be my wheelhouse 😂😂 (edited) 3y
Michael_Gee @Centique ooo! Thank you for the recs, Paula! I‘m definitely interested in The Western Wind! I will add that to the list. We‘re discussing Gilead this month, so I‘ll see how our discussion about elderly characters coming to terms with mortality goes! 3y
Reggie Is it too crazy to suggest The Elementals by Malcom McDowell? One of the members on here, Cinfhen, did a buddy read of it a couple of years ago and all kinds of people who I never thought would read horror, read it and liked it. It‘s southern gothic. 3y
Michael_Gee @Reggie McDowell is definitely on my TBR! I don‘t know if I‘d suggest him to this particular group (I heard Elementals gets gory). After I read about his Blackwater series in Paperbacks from Hell I bought the Valancourt edition that has them all in one huge book. Excited to get into that maybe towards the end of the year. A wonderfully written historical fantasy - dripping in Victorian London details with a side of creepiness. We‘re following the frail, elderly Fitzgerald sisters and the more robust Fowler family - all of whom seem to have some mysterious affliction. The book unwinds to cover events in the past that have entwined their fates. It has some Dickensian and His Dark Materials feels - although it‘s definitely adult and more character driven & literary ⬇️

Centique ...than HDM. I‘d say if you liked The Watchmaker of Fillagree Street this is definitely one for you. Again - the blurb for this book tells you the whole set up so don‘t read it if you want any sense of mystery while reading! (edited) 4y
Ruthiella I hate it when blurbs go too far! 😀 4y

readordierachel Oo, this sounds good! 4y
batsy This sounds really nice. Dickensian and His Dark Materials? Sold. Taking all of my willpower not to peek at the blurb 😅 4y
Centique @Ruthiella I know right?!! Luckily books sit for years on my TBR and then I‘ve forgotten the blurb by the time I pick them up to read. 4y
Centique @GhostStories really good! But it‘s probably only a 1/10 on the creepiness scale for you - you read properly scary books 😂 4y
Centique @readordierachel I hope you like it 😍 4y
Centique @batsy I think you‘d like it - I can always feel safe recommending a slower moving book to you or @LeahBergen - #thehistoricallife has slow moving superpowers 😂 4y

Loved this so much! I felt completely immersed in this world and invested in the characters. It was so believable. The ending felt a bit abrupt, but that was probably because I wanted more. One of my favourites of 2018.
