Boyhood
Boyhood: Scenes from provincial life | J M Coetzee
3 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
In Boyhood, J. M. Coetzee revisits the South Africa of half a century ago, to write about his childhood and interior life. Boyhood's young narrator grew up in a small country town. With a father he imitated but could not respect, and a mother he both adored and resented, he picked his way through a world that refused to explain its rules, but whose rules he knew he must obey. Steering between these contradictions, Boyhood evokes the tensions, delights and terrors of childhood with startling, haunting immediacy. Coetzee examines his young self with the dispassionate curiosity of an explorer rediscovering his own early footprints, and the account of his progress is bright, hard and simply compelling.

My next read. I received this book a while ago from my grandmother, when she reduced her bookshelf. I‘m curious, but I have no expectations☺️

Ok bookish internet, I need ideas please! I need help picking out a book for my 6th grade nephew. He‘s into football, cooking, video games, and whatever else 6th graders like these days. Any suggestions? I spent an hour in B&N today and couldn‘t decide what to get him.

Literary_Siren Boys are so hard! Goosebumps are usually a pretty good choice. Maybe the Percy Jackson series? If he likes to cook maybe there is a cookbook for boys? I don‘t really have any other ideas. 5y
Twocougs Guys Write for Guys Read 5y
LiteraryinLawrence Possibly the track series by Jason Reynolds? The first book is Ghost and there are 3 others about different male and female middle schoolers selected for the elite track team. I thought it was great, but it probably depends on what topics he and his parents are comfortable with. There are some real things that come up (an alcoholic parent, for example) but Reynolds knows his audience and I think he does a great job. 5y

LibrarianRyan If he is reading under grade try the Rotten School. If he is reading at age the following are ideas. 5y
LibrarianRyan 100 cupboards 5y
LibrarianRyan Anything by Green if he is into sports. 5y
Valink @Literary_Siren thanks for the suggestions! I‘ll find out if he read those. I got him a cookbook last year or the year before. His parents own a restaurant and he likes to help out there in the dining room and to cook at home. 5y
Valink @Twocougs thanks! I‘ll check it out! 5y
Valink @LiteraryinLititz I‘ve heard about the Track series, thanks for the suggestion! 5y
Valink @LibrarianRyan thanks for all the suggestions! He‘s reading at grade level so I‘ll check everything out. I usually try to get the kids something I‘ve read or heard good things about, it I‘m at a loss this year. I was thinking Strange the Dreamer for my 9th grade nephew. What do you think? His mom said he does like fantasy. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Valink I have it but haven‘t read it yet. I fully believe there is no such thing as girl/boy books, but I have also never seen it reviewed by a guy. But the author is good and writes wonderful stories. Why not. 5y
Valink @LibrarianRyan - I actually read it and loved it! I was thinking more reading level/is this something that will appeal to a 9th grader or is it more an older YA book, etc.... my kids are weird readers (my 17 year old son‘s favorite author is Ray Bradbery) so I don‘t have a grasp of what books appeal to what ages 5y
LibrarianRyan @Valink when u hit HS it‘s just so hard. Some teens are pro YA and some hate it in general and only want adult books. 5y

BlameJennyJane @JoScho thank you! 😁 6y
JHSiess I raised 2 boys. And have 2 nephews. 😋 I know all the tricks. 👍 I'm now crazy about my grandniece . . . & her sister, due in Sept.! Girls!!! 👗👜🛍👠👒💄👑 6y
BlameJennyJane @JHSiess girls would be so fun! The closest I got was a Barbie horse when my son was three... now he won‘t have anything to do with anything even remotely considered “girlish” including actual girls... but he says I don‘t count. 😆 6y
