The Barrow Will Send What it May
The Barrow Will Send What it May | Margaret Killjoy
12 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
Margaret Killjoys Danielle Cain series is a dropkick-in-the-mouth anarcho-punk fantasy that pits traveling anarchist Danielle Cain against eternal spirits, hypocritical ideologues, and brutal, unfeeling officers of the law. The story continues with The Barrow Will Send What it May. Now a nascent demon-hunting crew on the lam, Danielle and her friends arrive in a small town that contains a secret occult library run by anarchists and residents who claim to have come back from the dead. When Danielle and her crew investigate, they are put directly in the crosshairs of a necromancers wrath whose actions threaten to trigger the apocalypse itself. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

This is book 2 of a duology. I read book 1 four years ago, and the Colorado library system never got book 2. I found it now in Alaska, but it is a direct sequel (like, set a day or two after the events of book 1), and I didn't remember enough to fully enjoy it. Also, while there were supernatural elements, it wasn't nearly as creepy as the first. I suspect it would be better reading them back-to-back, but this didn't work on its own.

underground_bks Normalize recapping the previous book in the series, publishing industry 🙏🏼 2mo
TieDyeDude Someone should make a wiki-style website where anyone can post and edit entries. I've seen a site or two with series recaps, but they are very niche (like one or two people recapping the books they like). 2mo

Sleepy puppy.
It's a bummer that it doesn't look like Killjoy is gunna do anymore for this series, but it was fun while it lasted! This one finds Danielle Cain and gang in small town Montana where some folks have come back to life. The vibe of this series was just so cool. Killjoy described it as anarchist Scooby-Doo and that's all I can ask for.

Second in Killjoy's Danielle Cain series of novellas, featuring an anarchist Scooby gang. In this one, Cain and friends find themselves confronting necromancy in small-town Montana. The plot is fun and the cast is appealing.

Then, all at once, it was beer o‘clock.

I‘m enjoying this book, but it hasn‘t grabbed me as hard as the first one. Still, I like Margaret Killjoy‘s style and I love her characters, so I‘ll definitely read #3 whenever it appears.

I took myself off to the hilltop and read about half the second Danielle Cain novella on a shady, windy bench. Unfortunately, it was too hot for the prairie dogs to do their usual adorable frolicking. They just kind of lounged around in the grass, too far away for me to get any decent pics. I actually got scared that one of them was dead, but it did eventually get up and waddle off somewhere.

Well, I got the time wrong for tonight. I need to be there an hour later than I thought, so I could‘ve kept on painting. I might even have finished today.

Damn.

I‘m gonna use this extra, wasted hour to feel bad about that, and to do bookish stuff like show y‘all the library haul I forgot to share yesterday. It‘s been a while since I borrowed this much prose all at once.

Slajaunie What are you painting? 5y
xicanti @BookFrog nothing exciting. Just my bedroom. 5y
Slajaunie Painting is always exciting to me! I just finished painting my mom‘s living room and kitchen. What color are you painting it? 5y
xicanti @BookFrog it‘s a grey that I THINK is called Steel Tin Whistle. I‘m putting it over a similar colour called Moonlight that isn‘t available anymore. There are some pictures of my progress on my page! 5y

I liked The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion, the first novella featuring queer punk anarchist Danielle Cain, but I flat out loved the follow up. The first story was good, but its atmospheric setting and dark plot felt claustrophobic and overly gloomy. In contrast, The Barrow Will Send What It May is a demon-hunting road trip story filled with zippy writing and snarky dialogue. Read both for the best experience, but this one gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me.

Of all the ways to die, I think being pummeled to death by trashy hetero romance novels might be the worst. Or best. Either way, it didn't turn out to be my fate.

I‘m very into novellas this year, and I dug the previous one from this author, so I decided to start this last night.

LectricSheep I love the names of the books in this series but haven‘t picked them up yet. 6y
Anton @LectricSheep The titles are pretty great! 6y

Digging in to this on my day off! It‘s only a moderate cheat considering I sent four unanswered ARC request so I actually paid money for this book. Street dates be damned. #booksellerperks #margaretkilljoy #tordotcom #myrepismynemisis
