Everything Belongs to the Future
Everything Belongs to the Future | Laurie Penny
8 posts | 13 read | 8 to read
Time is a weapon wielded by the rich, who have excess of it, against the rest, who must trade every breath of it against the promise of another day's food and shelter. What kind of world have we made, where human beings can live centuries if only they can afford the fix? What kind of creatures have we become? The same as we always were, but keener. In the ancient heart of Oxford University, the ultra-rich celebrate their vastly extended lifespans. But a few surprises are in store for them. From Nina and Alex, Margo and Fidget, scruffy anarchists sharing living space with an ever-shifting cast of crusty punks and lost kids. And also from the scientist who invented the longevity treatment in the first place. Everything Belongs to the Future is a bloody-minded tale of time, betrayal, desperation, and hope that could only have been told by the inimitable Laurie Penny. I enjoyed reading Laurie Penny's debut into fiction. This novella was well written with a strong voice and engaging prose, but the character development was weak in the short format. I look forward to seeing more works of fiction from Penny in the future (please!). I appreciated her stressing the importance of art and necessity for artists. Scientists + artists working together is how we move forward as a species.

This novella packs a punch: world building in a pharmadystopia, intriguing characters, and a killer ending.

On vacation this week! Today's #beachread is this Tor novella, which is a scifi story about a future where anti-aging technology allows people to live decades longer--if they are wealthy or deemed "essential" to society. Of course, this leads to all sorts of conflict. Really interesting so far!

I'm a big fan of Laurie Penny's nonfiction. This is my first foray into reading her fiction and I was not disappointed.

Pretty good. A little blunt at times but it's a solid premise and well written in pretty much every other way.
