An epic work of literary creation . . . There could be no greater vindication of the wonders of the lands and people of Latin America than Memory of Fire. The Washington Post Eduardo Galeanos monumental three-volume retelling of the history of the New World begins with Genesis, a vast chain of legends sweeping from the birth of creation to the era of savage colonialism. Through lyrical prose and deep understanding, Galeano (author of the celebrated Open Veins of Latin America) recounts creation myths, pre-Columbian societies, and the brutality of conquest, from the Andes to the Great Plains. Galeanos project to restore to history breath, liberty, and the word unfolds as a unique, powerful work of literature. This daring masterpiece sets the past free, weaving a new kind of history from mythology, silenced voices, and the clash of worlds. Genesis is the first book of the Memory of Fire trilogy, which continues with Faces and Masks and Century of the Wind.

#Reading1001

As I hate short stories I wasn‘t expecting to enjoy this book but it turned out to be an unexpected delight.

The book uses vignettes to show the evolution of Latin American from the legends of the First Nations to the thoughts of the invaders looking for slaves and gold.

A welcome counterpoint to the Eurocentric history I was taught. Galeano gives a voice to those who are not usually heard.

I love reading around the world, but today's #booktober has brought to my attention that I have read very few books set in South America. Told in first-person vignettes, this first book in the Memory of Fire trilogy features many SA voices and is a beautiful, heartbreaking, and creative approach to telling Latin American history. It often pops up in Kindle Daily Deals--I recommend snagging it if you can! #translation #aroundtheworld

8little_paws Yes this challenge had me realize how low I am on books set in SA as well! 7y
LindsayReads @8little_paws I know! I thought it would be easy, but then I realized most of my south-of-the-border reading takes place in Central America and the Caribbean. Gotta get better! 7y
8little_paws @lindsayreads yeah that was the issue I had. I have a decent about of Caribbean and central American stuff 7y
