Lost Empress: A Novel | Sergio De La Pava
6 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
From the author of the acclaimed, PEN/Bingham Prizewinning A Naked Singularity; a shockingly hilarious novel that tackles, with equal aplomb, both America's most popular sport and its criminal justice system. From Paterson, New Jersey to Rikers Island to the streets of New York City, Sergio De La Pava's Lost Empress introduces readers to a cast of characters unlike any other in modern fiction: dreamers and exiles, immigrants and night-shift workers, lonely pastors and others at the fringes of societyeach with their own impact on the fragile universe they navigate. At the story's center is Nina Gill, daughter of the aging owner of the Dallas Cowboys, who was instrumental in building her father's dynasty. So it's a shock when her brother inherits the team and she is left with the Paterson Pork, New Jersey's only Indoor Football League franchise. Nina vows to take on the NFL and make the Paterson Pork pigskin kings of America. Meanwhile, Nuno DeAngelesa brilliant and lethal criminal mastermindhas gotten himself thrown into Rikers to commit perhaps the most audacious crime of all time. With grace, humor, and razor-sharp prose, De La Pava tackles everything from Salvador Dal, Joni Mitchell, psychiatric help, and emergency medicine to religion, the many species of love, and theoretical physics, as all these threads combine to count down to an epic conclusion.

De la Pava is a special, special writer. He‘s so ambitious with it, that it feels very different from reading most contemporary fiction. I mean it kind of has an old Russian lit sensibility to it.

He‘s a wordsmith and, while maybe not always the best at getting big emotions out of me, his IDEAS are phenomenally interesting.

It‘s also laugh out loud funny. Like I really was cracking up throughout.

I thought I‘d give another Sergio De La Pava novel a whirl, since I liked the other one I read, A Naked Singularity, so well.

This one is pretty dang good. It‘s challenging though; a lot of the paragraphs I have to read twice or thrice to really get what he‘s saying. For this reason it can actually get kind of tiresome. I do enjoy the parts when he makes things more clear because I can relax a little.

Just started this and already I‘m reveling in the insane hilarity of style and content. While her father leaves her brother a NFL team in his will, Nina gets the Paterson Pork, a team in the unknown Indoor Football League. She‘s out for revenge, and there‘s a genius criminal plotting his way out of Ryker‘s and I can see there‘s going to be a collision;
trenchant wit and commentary on modern culture; and definitely epic! What style! Loving it😎

I just finished this and I‘m a bit speechless. I don‘t care for football so don‘t let its inclusion in this novel dissuade you from trying it. Indoor football league takes on the nfl/an art heist drive the plot, but there is so much more. If you like heady books you will absolutely dig this. Sergio de la pava is a wizard. 🧙‍♂️

Tonton It‘s next on my list! 6y
AustenJennings @Tonton great! I‘ll be looking forward to your review! (edited) 6y
arubabookwoman I loved his first book but was hesitant about this one because the subject matter didn‘t appeal. But it sounds like maybe I should give it a try anyway. 6y
AustenJennings @arubabookwoman you definitely should. The main character nina gill is a super smart badass woman. If you liked naked singularity you‘ll love this one too 👹 6y
