May We Shed These Human Bodies
May We Shed These Human Bodies | Amber Sparks
7 posts | 7 read | 16 to read
"May We Shed These Human Bodies" peers through vast spaces and skies with the world's most powerful telescope to find humanity: wild and bright and hard as diamonds. Here is humanity building: families reconstruct themselves, mothers fashion babies from two-by-fours and nails, boys make a mother out of leaves and twigs and wishes. Here is humanity tearing down: a wife sets her house on fire in revenge, a young girl plots to kill the ghosts that stalk her, a dying man takes the whole human race with him. Here is humanity transforming: feral children, cannibalistic seniors, animal wivesa whole sideshow's worth of oddballs and freaks."

Pickpick

Ruby here has already shed her human body ?.

OMG I absolutely loved this collection of very short stories. They're creative and passionate and even funny at times. Kind of reminded me of Kelly Link, but I felt I could connect better with these stories, personally. Can't wait to read her next collection now!!

Why I read it: "M" pick for #litsyatoz and #mountTBR challenge.

Mimi28 Sounds interesting 😊I need something light hearted right now. Most of my #Litsyatoz stuff is library books so I feel like I need to read those first but I guess I can change them around. 7y
8little_paws @mimi28 some are light-hearted but there are also some really dark stories here as well. A really good light hearted book is 7y
Mimi28 Cool I'll check it out. Cute cat btw 😻 7y

RiotMom This looks awesome. Also, a collection of stories by a woman is a category in either #readharder or #litsyreadingchallenge if I remember correctly. This sounds like a good pick for that! 7y
8little_paws @RiotMom you're right! It's a read harder category. 7y
RiotMom 🙌🏻 stacked for that! 7y
cariashley Hah I read that as "shred" at first which would have been fitting ?? 7y

Ladies and gentlemen, Amber Sparks!

BookishMarginalia What an intriguing beginning! 7y
MicheleinPhilly 😳 This reminds me of that scene in Waiting to Exhale when Angela Basset lights all of her husband's possessions on fire. My mother clapped in the movie theater during that scene. I almost died. 7y
Zelma That is a fantastic first line! 7y

manifestsanity Portnoy is hilarious and wrong on every level. A comedian working blue. One of my favorites. 8y

Read the first two short stories and absolutely loved them. Darkly magical and Grimm-like.

Reading more Amber Sparks because I loved her most recent collection so darn much. I don't often take a chance on short fiction, but her stories contain a quirky magic I can't get enough of. Now if only this cat would let me concentrate.
