The day nine-year-old San San and her twelve-year-old brother, Ah Liam, discover their grandmother taking a hammer to a framed portrait of Chairman Mao is the day that forever changes their lives. To prove his loyalty to the Party, Ah Liam reports his grandmother to the authorities. But his belief in doing the right thing sets in motion a terrible chain of events. Now they must flee their home on Drum Wave Islet, which sits just a few hundred meters across the channel from mainland China. But when their mother goes to procure visas for safe passage to Hong Kong, the government will only issue them on the condition that she leave behind one of her children as proof of the family's intention to return.Against the backdrop of early Maoist China, this captivating and emotional tale follows a brother, a sister, a father, and a mother as they grapple with their agonizing decision, its far-reaching consequences, and their hope for redemption.

After 1949 China became a Republic, everything stayed the same for a while, as the craziness of the Cultural Revolution began many of the wealthy and the middle classes left .Then the border got sealed and getting out was very difficult. This the story of one family and their attempts to leave. The father was all ready in HK and though there were four of them they were only granted 3 temporary exit permits. The 9 yr old daughter was left behind.

⛵️Re-checked out so I could finish the last 25%.
⛵️Final 2 chaprs were horribly rushed when compared to rest of story‘s flow & progress.
⛵️Finale felt like it was out of convenience rather than a natural conclusion of events.
⛵️Ah Liam‘s POV barely gets any attention.
⛵️Some other POVs were stretched out & detracted from development & my investment in other characters‘ plights.
⛵️Hinted at PTSD trauma at end.
⛵️Badly written conclusion.
⛵️3.75/5.

⚓️Tale about family who made a horrid sacrifice for survival.
⚓️Writing is evocative, beautiful, & intelligent while being simple & straightforward.
⚓️Told via 4 POVs that help readers view differing reactions/affects of trauma & abandonment.
⚓️Subject matter is heavy & at times discomforting, but so important.
⚓️Rich in details about emotional & psychological effects of political manipulation.
⚓️Exquisitely described settings/atmospheres.

BiblioNyan I only finished 75%. I‘ll be re-checking it out from the library next week, where I hope to finish it. If the ending is good, then it‘ll be a 5/5 hands down. 5y

Spiced hot cocoa & a book I‘ve 15 hours to start & finish! Let‘s go!

Follows a family who‘ve to make the ultimate sacrifice when they flee their Chinese home in order to fight for their survival. The author is Singaporean. The book is one of my most-anticipated reads of the year.

Set in Maoist China, a young boy, Ah Liam, reports that his grandmother took a hammer to Chairman Mao's portrait because he believes that is the right thing to do. This causes Ah Liam's family to flee to Hong Kong, where his father has been living, but the government will not provide enough visas which results in one of the children being left behind.

A harrowing tale about living with the consequences of our choices.

Heartbreaking sorry of a family torn apart in communist China, when the mother is forced to leave a child behind in order to cross the border to safety. Flawed characters making impossible choices in dire circumstances. This was a quick read. #AsianLitBingo #netgalley

TheLibrarian I‘m currently reading this too! Pretty good so far. 6y

For some reason, I passed on reading Soy Sauce for Beginners when it came in 2014 which was strange for me because I have a “thing” for Asian literature. I just ran into Chen‘s second book, Bury What We Cannot Take, and I was completely absorbed in nine-year-old Sen Sen‘s story.

A well-built story about a family in mainland China trying to immigrate to Hong Kong intact. The story itself was intricate, compelling, and nuanced. However, I found the character development to be flat and lacking. Ultimately, the underdeveloped characters undermined the storyline. #netgalley

It‘s a harrowing story, set in China in 1957: a young boy reports his grandmother to the authorities for taking a hammer to a portrait of Chairman Mao. Unfortunately, the extremely weak characterization meant that, a fifth of the way in, I didn‘t care about anyone or anything that was happening. I shall not be continuing. Great cover, though.

saresmoore It really is a great cover. 6y

8leagueboot This COVER! 😍 7y
shawnmooney @tif @Marchpane Hey there lovely people, are we still on for a buddy read? The e-book is released on March 20, and because it‘s so cheap – about $7.50 – I‘ve already pre-ordered it. So I‘d be ready to start the day after or sometime at the end of March. Are you in? And would @8leagueboot care to join us? 6y
Marchpane I don‘t remember what this one‘s about - but I‘m in! 6y
shawnmooney @Marchpane 😍😍😂😂 I love a bookish pushover! 😍😍😛😛 6y
tif @shawnmooney I'm in! I need to start a calendar for buddy reads though! Me and my damn need to over commit myself 😂😂 6y
shawnmooney @Marchpane @tif This is just an idea, but the buddy reads I take part in over on BookTube usually happen on Voxer. It‘s a free app where you can exchange text and audio messages. I find it a really deep way to do a buddy read. If either of you or both of you have (or are willing to get) the app, please add me under shawnthebookmaniac. Whee! 6y
shawnmooney @Marchpane @tif Hey lovely people, haven‘t heard from anyone or seen any posts about the book. Just checking in... 6y
