The Vanishing Season
The Vanishing Season | Joanna Schaffhausen
24 posts | 35 read | 58 to read
Winner of the Minotaur Books/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Competition, Joanna Schaffhausen's accomplished debut will grip readers from the opening page to the stunning conclusion.Ellery Hathaway knows a thing or two about serial killers, but not through her police training. She's an officer in sleepy Woodbury, MA, where a bicycle theft still makes the newspapers. No one there knows she was once victim number seventeen in the grisly story of serial killer Francis Michael Coben. The only victim who lived. When three people disappear from her town in three years, all around her birthday-the day she was kidnapped so long ago-Ellery fears someone knows her secret. Someone very dangerous. Her superiors dismiss her concerns, but Ellery knows the vanishing season is coming and anyone could be next. She contacts the one man she knows will believe her: the FBI agent who saved her from a killer's closet all those years ago.Agent Reed Markham made his name and fame on the back of the Coben case, but his fortunes have since turned. His marriage is in shambles, his bosses think he's washed up, and worst of all, he blew a major investigation. When Ellery calls him, he can't help but wonder: sure, he rescued her, but was she ever truly saved? His greatest triumph is Ellery's waking nightmare, and now both of them are about to be sucked into the past, back to the case that made them... with a killer who can't let go.

I had read this a few years back & loved it but then never read the rest of the books in the series! I love the author‘s Annalisa Vega series, so I thought I should go & read her Ellery Hathaway series! So i re-read this one! Went through it quickly & it was great! Schaffhausen does such a wonderful job of developing her characters & keeping up with the suspense! I really recommend this book! I can‘t wait to read more of Ellery!

A light pick. I love the ‘sole survivor‘ premise but feel like this could have been executed (no pun intended) a little more tightly. I don‘t know if the Woodbury police were being willfully obtuse or they‘ve never heard of Google. The killer was obvious but I‘m hoping the later entries are a bit more polished as I did enjoy the story. #StartASeries

3½⭐
This was an okay mystery, ugh, it's difficult to say why without being spoiler-y. Mystery thrillers are so subjective. What works for one person doesn‘t always work for someone else…and this didn‘t work for me. Essentially, I didn‘t buy into who the killer was and it threw the whole story off for me.

I'm not sure if I will continue the series...

This book has a great twist, but it was a slow read for me.

I loved the angle on this one - the girl who survives a notorious serial killer. She‘s now a cop and put her past behind her, but missing people and freaky birthday cards tell her maybe she int out of the woods yet... full review at ScrappyMags.com

I liked the give and take relationship between Ellery and Reed. Most of the book was good. However, I had picked out the killer by the second time he appeared in story. #2018christyread #quickread

I've been wanting to charge the protagonist with obstruction of justice for about 75 pages now. It's kind of annoying.

Update: It went from Sunday night to Sunday morning in that order.

The Vanishing Season by Joanna Schaffhausen was an interesting crime mystery that totally threw me for a loop at the end!

If you enjoy novels that are a bit of a slow-burn, but that really picks up toward the end, you have to check this one out!

Enjoyed the pacing of this one! I didn‘t predict who it was until close to the reveal so that was nice. Would make a great movie! Excited for future works from this author!

I enjoyed this mystery for the most part. I had it figured out pretty early on so the ending wasn‘t anything mind blowing.

Excellent first mystery, about a serial killer‘s only surviving victim who changes her name and becomes a police officer. But when she receives anonymous cards on her birthday years later, it looks like someone has figured out who she really is, and that they might be tied to a series of unexplained disappearances in her town. I really enjoyed it despite guessing the identity of the killer early on. ☠️🖤📚

Reminiscent of Mary Higgins Clark, The Vanishing Season is just dark enough and with the right amount of small twists to keep you guessing.

A serial killer may be on the lose the small town where Ellery is a cop, but no one else believes her. Worse yet, the crimes may be linked to her past.

There were a few issues, but on the whole an enjoyable novel.

Used my final summer Friday to finish this, the first winner of the crime novel contest by Minotaur. THE VANISHING SEASON has super strong FINAL GIRL vibes, but is strong on its own. Solid debut novel and thriller to put on your list 🤗
