A very informative and interesting look at the history of public education and schools in this country. As an educator it was amazing to read that even though we think we have made many gains forward we aren‘t all that far from where we started!

These are the first books I thought of for the @RealLifeReading #fallintobooks #cursive prompt.

Thinking about the history of the teaching profession, I think they also work for the #autumnreads #femaleheroes prompt for the photo challenge @JoeStalksBeck and @Tiffy_Reads are hosting.

Melissa_J Kids aren't taught cursive writing here any longer 😢 Is it still taught where you are? 7y
Sace @Melissa_J I'm not sure. My daughter had to learn it, but she graduated from high school 10 years ago. It's such a shame. I feel like we are getting rid of some good, rote activities. Maybe it's because I'm old, but teaching cursive can teach patience and improve fine motor skills. Diagramming a sentence is not evil and grammar is a good thing (according to our state Dept of Ed grammar should not be explicitly taught 😕 7y

ptkpepe98 Which is why when the kiddos arrive at college, they are shocked to be placed into remedial courses of reading and English. 7y
Sace @ptkpepe98 thank you! I'm glad I'm not alone. There seems to be such a focus on "making them think" but we've dumped all the things that help them arrive at better thinking like patience and analyzing parts or a sentence and understanding a grammar and phonics system. Or maybe I'm a fuddy duddy. 7y
ptkpepe98 @RestlessFickleBookSlut - Many know how to pass the SAT, but get uberstressed by an essay or analysis paper that asks them to explain the impact of this on that. I teach kids who need reading, and also sophomore level poli sci classes. Both are filled with recent hs grads who know how to zip through tests if they're told and memorized exactly what to study. At a loss if not. It's sad. What about when they are responsible for things? 7y
