XO, OX: A Love Story | Adam Rex
12 posts | 17 read | 2 to read
Dear Gazelle,For some time now I have wanted to write a letter to say how much I admire you. You are so graceful and fine. Even when you are running from tigers you are like a ballerina who is running away from tigers.I think that what I'm trying to say is that I love you.XO,OXAnd so begins an epic, if initially unrequited, love affair between a graceful gazelle and a clumsy, hapless ox. Romance will never be the same. Adam Rex's hilarious, sweet, and at times heartbreaking letters between a hopelessly romantic ox and a conceited, beautiful gazelle is paired perfectly with Scott Campbell's joyful illustrations to bring you a romance for the ages.

2 ⭐ I originally read this book over 2 years ago. At first I loved it. I thought it was so cute. Then I read someone else‘s review pointing out that it was stalking and grooming. And now upon a second read, they are correct. This reads like the song Stan from Eminem. The Ox is writing to his favorite celebrity Gazelle. He rights constantly, no matter how many times Gazelle asks him to stop. Yep, this is a playbook of a stalker or a groomer

LibrarianRyan And I am regretful of my original review. While I do not think libraries should remove this book from their collection, I do think it is a great example of what NOT to do. 2y

Hmmm... at first glance, this is a cute story of a relationship between a clueless ox and a too-fabulous-for-you gazelle. But it makes me a little uncomfortable with the message it sends. You see, the gazelle very clearly and repeatedly tells the ox she‘s not interested and to stop contacting her. But ox doesn‘t, and eventually changes her mind? Wears her down? Ick. #bbrc #atoz:x

LibrarianRyan hum I didn't think of that aspect when I read it. thanks for your pOV. 4y

Dear Littens, thank you for finding and sharing this book with me. It was lovely. And it could have gone on much longer. I really want to see Gazelle fall in love with Ox. For now I will have to live with falling in love with this book.

I finished up my #BBRC picture books with these two. XO Ox was adorable. I loved the illustrations. Now I‘ll be moving on to a day at the library in the easy readers section.

Ox loves Gazelle. Gazelle...well...doesn‘t quite reciprocate Ox‘s affections. Written in epistolary form, readers view the “courtship” of Ox and Gazelle. The humor, both written and in illustration, seems like it may be better appreciated by adults. Fun and cute. Letter X for #BBRC #A2Z

Librarybelle @ImperfectCJ - tagging you, because it expressed interest in my thoughts on this one! 5y

ImperfectCJ @Librarybelle Thanks for the tag! I enjoyed reading your review of this one. Great use of "epistolary"! 5y

#bbrc #a2z I decided to start with the toughest letter right out of the gate. This is a sweet tale of admiration and unrequited love that could have sunk into the stalking realm but, unlike so many Oldies songs, doesn't.

@LibrarianRyan

LibrarianRyan Yeahhh. And a new title to add to the goodreads list. 5y
Librarybelle My copy just came in for me at the library! 5y
ImperfectCJ @Librarybelle Nice! So you knew about this one already and requested it? I'd not heard of it, just found it on the shelves while browsing for a title that started with X. I'd be interested in hearing what you think of it! 5y
Librarybelle I did a search in the catalog for “x” books, and this came up...that‘s all I knew about it! 5y
ImperfectCJ @Librarybelle Aha! That was my planned next step if I hadn't found it by the end of the shelves. I was reluctant to give up the “hunt“ feel of looking over all of the book spines. :-) 5y

Hey Littens participating in #bbrc, I actually did find two more X titles in my library's Overdrive database! 🙌 🎉#a2z

Soubhiville Sweet! Thanks! 5y
LibrarianRyan Yeah. If need be I created a list of Z x and q titles on Goid reads. I will get these added. 5y
alisiakae @LibrarianRyan Thank you for doing that for this challenge! Part of the fun was the scavenger hunt for each letter, but I liked that you made lists if needed. ❣️ 5y
tjwill I immediately checked my library's Overdrive, and they don't have either of these. I really need to get to the actual library to look!

#LiteraryLove Day 2: Gazelle has been receiving many loveletters from her #Admirer, Ox, who was relentless in his pursuit of the beautiful gazelle, who I thought (at least in the beginning), was quite full of herself. In fact, so self-assured is she of her own beauty that she even has a generic response that she provides to her many admirers, together with a signed enclosed photograph. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-hmi

vkois88 The bottom right illustration has me in stitches 😂 5y

Xo, Ox: A Love Story is a fun and witty book illustrated by Adam Rex and designed by Scott Campbell. The book tells the hilarious story of a hopelessly romantic ox writing love letters to his uninterested love, the gazelle. This picture book would be great for an elementary class as an RA or even an RT. Because the theme of this story is letter writing, there are a number of great activities that can be used in the classroom such as a

Jbombardiere UDL principle 3.2 highlights patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships which works well with this specific book due to the relationships that develops between the characters through back and forth letter writing. EL strategy 7 is a good tool to use with esol students to be sure that they are catching on to the diff. In personality between the characters. 6y
