Winner of the Wellcome Prize A finalist for the Samuel Johnson Prize and the Costa Award A memoir quite unlike any other. It has the strength of an arrow: taut, spiked, quavering, working to its fatal conclusion...an extraordinary story told in an extraordinary way.The Sunday Times The most heartbreaking memoir of the year.Independent on Sunday Winner of the Wellcome Book Prize, and finalist for every major nonfiction award in the UK, including the Samuel Johnson Prize and the Costa Award, The Iceberg is artist and writer Marion Coutts astonishing memoir; an adventure of being and dying and a compelling, poetic meditation on family, love, and language. In 2008, Tom Lubbach, the chief art critic for The Independent was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The Iceberg is his wife, Marion Coutts, fierce, exquisite account of the two years leading up to his death. In spare, breathtaking prose, Coutts conveys the intolerable and, alongside their two year old son Evwhose language is developing as Toms is disappearingMarion and Tom lovingly weather the storm together. In short bursts of exquisitely textured prose, The Iceberg becomes a singular work of art and an uplifting and universal story of endurance in the face of loss.

1. Warm cheesy artichoke dip with homemade pita chips
2. Top 5 (actually 8%) in no particular order: The Round House; The Iceberg; The Underground Railroad; Song of Solomon; The Nature Fix
3. At least 3 of every 4 books read need to be ones I already own (I have SOOOOO many unread books 😯)
4. Eat more plant based meals (3 or 4 evening meals/week) - but I love meat/fish too much to give them up completely!

laurieluna Yeah I'm aiming to eat more fruit and veg too. And I'm pescatarian! I eat way too much cheese and pastry. 😬 6y
CuriousG @miralunasbooknook Cheese may actually be my kryptonite - I would eat ALL the cheese 😕 6y
monalyisha Oh! The Nature Fix is on my list of non-fic TBR. Good to hear! 6y
CuriousG @monalyisha I'm such a nerd for that kind of non-fiction. I have so many sections flagged and the second I finished I re-read all of marked pages. I have no doubt you'll love it! 6y

"The first thing to understand is that endless retelling is overwhelming. It is boring, draining, dispiriting."

I can't say what it was like for my parents when my brother's brain tumour was discovered, but I imagine this was true. I do know that since my husband's traumatic brain injury, I certainly feel this acutely. #braintumour #ABI #TBI #storyrepeateddaily ?

I thought I'd cry over this, but I didn't. This may sound strange, but I found it a lovely read. Sad, but lovely.

"By instinct and not by sight I get out, drinking great sobs and heaves with tears glassing my face as I run." Oh my goodness, but the writing is beautiful!

What made me cry? This book. Marion Coutts writes like poetry about her husband Tom Lubbock's battle with brain cancer. It affected the language part of his brain, and as a long time art critic, his struggle with language and communication is heartbreaking. It's a beautiful accounting of her experience being his caretaker and watching him fade while also raising their young children grow in the world.

Current read. It's FANTASTIC so far. Very blunt, raw memoir of a woman's journey with her husband after he was diagnosed with brain cancer until his death. It reads like poetry. Gonna need the Kleenex for the next part 😥 #ReadWomen

Notafraidofwords This is on my to read pile. 8y
