Margaret and the Moon
Margaret and the Moon | Dean Robbins
7 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
Margaret Hamilton loved numbers as a young girl. She knew how many miles it was to the moon (and how many back). She loved studying algebra and geometry and calculus and using math to solve problems in the outside world. Soon math led her to MIT and then to helping NASA put a man on the moon! She handwrote code that would allow the spacecrafts computer to solve any problems it might encounter. Apollo 8. Apollo 9. Apollo 10. Apollo 11. Without her code, none of those missions could have been completed. Dean Robbins and Lucy Knisley deliver a lovely portrayal of a pioneer in her field who never stopped reaching for the stars. From the Hardcover edition.

An approachable, easy to read story about Margaret Hamilton and the computer code she wrote for the moon missions. Cute illustrations that actually do capture the real Hamilton in a cartoony kind of way, and an inspirational story about curiosity and hard work.

Another great picture book biography my 6yo and I loved was this one about NASA computer programmer Margaret Hamilton. Also, Lucy Knisley illustrated it!

#girlsinscience #itshistory

A two-fer this Monday morning. A children's picture book about a girl named Margaret who loved numbers and science who grew into a woman who wrote code and helped NASA with the space program. Illustrated by one of my favorite's, Lucy Knisley.

I found this by googling Lucy Knisley's current projects. I love her artwork and books. This book came up, and in light of HIDDEN FIGURES, it's a timely read about the woman who invented the term "software engineer." Fascinating woman! #kidlit #picturebook

BellaBookNook Oh my goodness I love the style illustrations. I'm going to see if I can hunt down a copy at my library! 7y
Mc_cart_ny Ok, I thought this was going to be Star Wars related, because the word bubble in the picture looks like the Death Star. "That's no moon...." 7y
EvieBee @BellaBookNook I hope they have a copy. Lucy Knisley has such a great style of drawing! 7y

This was a great book! I had no idea a woman's programming saved the Apollo 11 moon landing. Everyone from my 7-14 (plus mom) enjoyed this one.

EvieBee Yay! Getting a copy from the library tomorrow. 7y
