Dangerous Talent
Dangerous Talent | Aaron Elkins, Charlotte Elkins
5 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
From the outside, Alix London appears to have it all: a glamorous career as an art consultant, a sumptuous condo in Seattle's toniest neighborhood, a gorgeous figure, and a presence that positively exudes Ivy League breeding and old money. Unfortunately for Alix, what you see isn't exactly what you get. A brilliant, once-promising art student, the daughter of a prominent New York art conservator, Alix and her world were left in ruins when her father went to prison for art forgery. Now a Harvard dropout with an emptied bank account, she is languishing in a career that has produced little more than a lucky house-sitting gig. Then she meets Christine Lemay, a novice art collector with deep pockets and a handle on a recently discovered painting by American master Georgia O'Keeffe. Chris needs the painting authenticated, and Alix's career desperately needs the boost that will come from such a high-profile assignment. But when an attempted art theft goes horribly wrong, Alix is plunged into a tangled web of forgery, deceit--and murder. Only her connoisseur's eye (and a little unlikely help from her roguish father) can give the FBI the expertise they need to crack the case...assuming the killer doesn't come for her next. Witty and surprising, A Dangerous Talent introduces a clever and enchanting new sleuth to the ranks of American detective fiction.

#NOvember
With a background in art restoration & consulting & also being the daughter of an infamous art forger, Alix London knows a #Masterpiece when she sees it. I‘ve only read the first two books in this mystery series so far. The first book is set in the Santa Fe art scene with the emphasis on Georgia O'Keeffe's work & a newly discovered painting that Alix is hired to authenticate.🎨📚

Andrew65 Yet another series I am not aware of. 4y
TrishB @Cinfhen @Andrew65 don‘t know these either! 4y

Crazeedi @Cinfhen @Andrew65 @TrishB I've never heard of this one either, but it looks intriguing! 4y
Crazeedi @DebinHawaii thanks for post! 4y
EadieB @Cinfhen I have not heard of this series but both Aaron and Charlotte do write separately and I do own some of their other novels: 4y
gradcat @Cinfhen I think these sound really good! Thank for the tip! ( @EadieB ... you know all the books, I now firmly believe that you are a walking card catalogue, am I right? @Crazeedi @Andrew65 ? 😂🤣😂 4y
EadieB @gradcat I have this app I used when I bought all my books. You can scan the book and then it keeps a record and you can select the author and see what books you own written by that author. It also helped in the fact that I never bought the same book twice. That‘s how I know which books I own. I check out The Book Crawler app and I can easily look them up without having to check my shelves. 4y
gradcat @EadieB Oooh, that sounds perfect!! Thanks for telling me about it. I‘ve never heard of it before. By the way, are you a night owl, maybe? 4y
EadieB @gradcat I went to bed at 7:30 as I did 2 days of babysitting and was exhausted but after 4 or 5 hours of sleep I‘m wide awake. I‘m going back to bed as I‘ll never last the whole day if I don‘t. (edited) 4y
gradcat @EadieB You sound just like me. Sleep well, my friend! 🛌 4y
DebinHawaii @Crazeedi You are welcome! 😉 4y
Crazeedi @EadieB what app do you use? 4y
EadieB @Crazeedi It's called Book Crawler. I use it on my iphone. (edited) 4y
Crazeedi @EadieB thanks I'm going to check it out for sure!! 4y

A Dangerous Talent was a pleasant surprise--I didn't really know what to expect. The book focuses on Alix London, an art connoisseur whose father was disgraced a decade ago at the center of an art forgery scandal. Alix is struggling to make her away in the art world while living down her father's corruption. She is hired by Chris, who needs her advice about a priceless work by Georgia O'Keeffe. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod As Alix works to determine whether the work is genuine, she comes into contact with a host of unusual characters, including a boozy gallery owner, an eccentric museum curator, and an obnoxious, wealthy agent. Narrator Kate Rudd (I listened on Scribd) is great, and the story was engaging and fast-paced. A strong start to an ongoing series. 5y

A low-slung Lamborghini cruises along a curvy, narrow road through scenic NM mountains. Will Alix London and Christine LeMay survive when a tailgating pickup truck and a tractor trailer barreling down the wrong side of the road try to force them through the guardrail and down a cliff? This chase is the most thrilling moment. After that, the resolution of the mystery was anticlimactic. I found the mastermind behind the mystery to be a let-down. 👇

MaGoose This book was between a so-so and a pick. But I liked it well enough to decide to continue reading the series. 5y

I love books that have an element of art crime!! I went on a forgery/heist reading bender several years ago and am now a sucker for all books with these themes. Fun entertaining read. A+ narration. #audiobook

Tex2Flo Art crime is my jam! Love ‘em. 6y

Me too, main character! And, this irrational fear prevents me from travel to earthquake prone locations, such as Cali, to my significant otter's frustration.

SaraRosett I liked that series! 7y
MMenefee @SaraRosett Amazon thought I'd like it, so I figured I'd give the first book a try at $.99. So far, so good, aside from some errors that should've been caught by a proof reader. 7y
