First found McCabe as the author of a short story in the liner notes for one of my favourite albums, Gavin Friday's Shag Tobacco. Found The Butcher Boy through the 1998 film, directed by Neil Jordan, whose 1995 film, Michael Collins, is one of my favourites. Finally read this decades later. I love modern Irish art.

This book is intense and I loved it. It is the type of suspense that comes from seeing a downward spiral and knowing something horrible is coming and knowing you can't stop it. You don't know what the bad is gonna be precisely, but just that it will be very bad.
For anyone with tastes that run along descents into madness meets coming of age type stories, sprinkled with violence; this book is for you!

I've almost finished 'The Waking Fire' by Anthony Ryan and hence going to start my next book soon! Despite this not being a fantasy, The Butcher Boy is a classic pyschological fiction that has caught my interest. I can't wait to start reading!! 💕
