Blackwing
Blackwing | Ed McDonald
Set on a postapocalyptic frontier, Blackwing is a gritty fantasy debut about a mans desperate battle to survive his own dark destiny... Hope, reason, humanity: the Misery breaks them all. Under its cracked and wailing sky, the Misery is a vast and blighted expanse, the arcane remnant of a devastating war with the immortals known as the Deep Kings. The war ended nearly a century ago, and the enemy is kept at bay only by the existence of the Engine, a terrible weapon that protects the Miserys border. Across the corrupted no-mans-land teeming with twisted magic and malevolent wraiths, the Deep Kings and their armies bide their time. Watching. Waiting. Bounty hunter Ryhalt Galharrow has breathed Misery dust for twenty bitter years. When hes ordered to locate a masked noblewoman at a frontier outpost, he finds himself caught in the middle of an attack by the Deep Kings, one that signifies they may no longer fear the Engine. Only a formidable show of power from the very woman he is seeking, Lady Ezabeth Tanza, repels the assault. Ezabeth is a shadow from Galharrows grim past, and together they stumble onto a web of conspiracy that threatens to end the fragile peace the Engine has provided. Galharrow is not ready for the truth about the blood hes spilled or the gods hes supposed to serve

It was an excellent fantasy story with a well written and complex world, and a magic system that was able to hold itself up consistently.

I liked the characters well enough, though I didnt fall in love with them the way I would have liked too, which was the only thing really letting the story down for me. Even so, it was packed full of flawed, funny and badass characters - there just weren't any I personally was able to connect to.

Today was the perfect day for a walk with an audiobook across the prom! I love living so close to the sea on days like today 😁

So far as my book goes, I was having a little trouble getting into it at first as the main character Galharrow seemed to be a miserable, sulky drunk and little else, but his colours started to show through a couple of chapters in, and suddenly I'm 14 chapters in and dying to know what happens next! 😅

Cuilin Picture is beautiful. Are they taken from the Isle of Man? 3y
TCLinrow @Cuilin they are 😁 have you been to the island before? 3y
Cuilin @TCLinrow I was there 1981, I was 8 years old. I stayed in a hotel in Douglas and watched the royal wedding! 3y

Oh I loved every inch of this. The grittiness, the suspense, the harrow and the feeling of dread and loss, that bleak and melancholy feeling that creeped through the entire story, it was all so wonderfully pieced together. You could feel the despair and lost hope as each page turned, but every now and then you felt that small surge of hope shine through.

“Only three kinds of people willingly enter the Misery: the desperate, the stupid and the greedy.”

Haven‘t read any fantasy novels for a while. Got a feeling this one is going to be pretty awesome #edmcdonald #fantasy #grimdark

Dark, brooding and skilfully plotted. Just one of my favourite books. Not bad for a first time author.

Book was a little crude, in a way I think would appeal to teenage boys. There was a very interesting magic/science system I wish had been expounded upon more. All in all, it was an interesting read.

Corruption doesn't take root in isolation, it embeds itself where the soil is fertile.

But there are some things that, no matter how foolish, no matter how much you're going to regret it, you choose to do it anyway. Because it's the only option you got.

Ed McDonald's solid debut fantasy novel (the first in a trilogy) has great world building, an interesting political and magical system and an ambivalent view towards wizards but I found that Galharrow tries too hard to be morally ambivalent, the female characters (particular Ezabeth) are under baked and I found that although the time jumps kept the plot moving, it meant that the story didn't have time to breathe.

Currently Reading 📖

I'm so stoked to start this! I was at an event the other day that the author was at and he read an extract and it sounds AMAZING!

Not that it didn't sound it before but still! I'm so in the mood for a good fantasy book too!

A very fun, gritty science fiction novel! Ed McDonald does a great job drawing up each character and making them all fascinating for different reasons. His settings are dark an intriguing. I recommend this to fans of dystopian sci-fi, dark magic stories, or anyone who enjoyed the grittiness of the TV show Firefly.

About little more than halfway through this ARC of Black Wing by Ed McDonald but not loving it as much as I wanted to...Still think It's worth my time though. It has many elements that I love in my fantasy reads the most interesting being the magical system and the belief system.
