Boys dont keep diariesor do they? The launch of an exciting and innovatively illustrated new series narrated by an unforgettable kid every family can relate to Its a new school year, and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. The hazards of growing up before youre ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary. In book one of this debut series, Greg is happy to have Rowley, his sidekick, along for the ride. But when Rowleys star starts to rise, Greg tries to use his best friends newfound popularity to his own advantage, kicking off a chain of events that will test their friendship in hilarious fashion. Author/illustrator Jeff Kinney recalls the growing pains of school life and introduces a new kind of hero who epitomizes the challenges of being a kid. As Greg says in his diary, Just dont expect me to be all Dear Diary this and Dear Diary that. Luckily for us, what Greg Heffley says he wont do and what he actually does are two very different things. Since its launch in May 2004 on Funbrain.com, the Web version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been viewed by 20 million unique online readers. This year, it is averaging 70,000 readers a day. First, I know I‘m not the target audience. Second, I get it. Middle-schoolers and the personal fable (main character energy), people are flawed, etc. I absolutely see why kids would dig this series. I just really struggled with this. There were parts that were funny, but mostly I was like, “Wow. You‘re a real d-bag…” I won‘t dissuade anyone from liking/reading them, I just didn‘t connect with this.

Daisey Completely get this review. I get why kids love them, and I also love my own fluff sometimes. Yet, I also want them to read better stuff along with this. 3mo
AshleyHoss820 @Daisey There were just so many problematic things for me. I agree with you. I both get it and don‘t get it. And I‘m not one of those readers who needs a big moral lesson or likable characters, but dang…😂🤣 3mo

It's Greg Heffley's first year of middle school, and he is stressing out. His older brother Rodrick warned Greg about middle school and gave tips on how to "survive" middle school. Greg thinks he's better than most people, but in reality, he isn't. Him and his best friend, Rowley, get into a fight after Greg gets Rowley in trouble and accidentally broke his arm. Greg has no choice but to hang out with the weird kid. *More in the comments*

Oneil.Perez In school, there is a game called "cheese touch." It's like tag. A group of older boys were forcing Rowley to eat it, but Greg steps in and does it for Rowley. Greg and Rowley and friends again. If you like books like this, you should read the sequels of it. There are currently 17 books. I personally think the theme of it is friendship. Greg tried to change Rowley to be cooler so he could fit in, but that did nothing but ruin their friendship. 14mo
Oneil.Perez He took his best friend for granted and had to suffer by hanging out with the weird kid. He was also jealous of Rowleys popularity. Greg changed that by eating the cheese for Rowley. 14mo

Funny, tongue-in-cheek, middle grade. The voice really comes through & I can definitely see why this has been a popular series. Greg is a great character & has the appropriate naivety of a middle schooler, so it was fun to read his (mis)adventures. As an adult, it's easy to see he isn't always the best at making smart decisions, though Kinney's witty writing may not always be picked up on by younger readers. Still, a great middle grade read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

My son recommended that I start the series…so there I go. Greg Heffley is not my favorite character but I see why 8 yo get a kick out of him…I guess. 🤷🏻‍♀️

merelybookish He doesn't get better. 😐 My kid loved this series and we read them all 1y
Librariana I attempted to read the first book to keep up with what my students at the time were finding entertaining (I taught 6th - 8th grade back in the early 2000s.) I had to bail. I also never understood the Junie B. Jones or Captain Underpants crazes respectively. 1y
Smrloomis @Librariana Same. Ugh, I couldn‘t make it through any of those! Well at least kids are reading… 😅 1y
JackOBotts @merelybookish @Librariana @Smrloomis definitely not my jam, but I‘m glad he‘s reading (though I do let my son know that Greg‘s not the role model type…can‘t help it). There is a book for everyone, & this is certainly not one for me…but I know if he asks me to read more, I will. 🤷🏻‍♀️💜 1y

When Greg Heffley begins middle school, he cares a lot about popularity and being “cool”. His older brother Roderick makes sure to give him a hard time and has not given Greg a great reputation to live up to at school. Greg and Rowley are childhood best friends, but they run into a conflict when popularity issues come into play. Greg loses sight of the value of his friendship with Rowley but they eventually sort things out.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a great series of books, but the first one is one of my absolute favorites. The books follows the main character Greg as he tries to find popularity but always seems to find himself in hilarious situations. The simple artistic style in the book is always very pleasing to follow as it adds context to the story.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series was written by Jeff Kinney. I absolutely loved these books as a kid. They were always fun and interesting. In addition, I really liked the text. It was easy for me to read. Furthermore, the illustrations in the books are very cool. They always went along with what was happening in the book. Overall, I really like these books.

This was really fun to read and I am going to continue this series. This made me to think my own school time and for me this felt really realistic - also by showing how children always find some way to do what they shouldn't. :D

I‘ve been reading these books all the way up until Big Shot, when I decided to stop buying them at bookstores. But yeah I think this is a charming, funny, and VERY honest depiction of middle school from the perspective of one self-absorbed kid. It‘s a must see I kid you not.

This is RF. This is great for LC. This book won a Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award. This book is the first book written from the famous series a Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It is about a boy going into middle school and trying to fit in. He faces trouble throughout the book. It is a funny book for older elementary students to read. https://www.wimpykidclub.co.uk/wp-content/themes/wimpy-default/_inc/pdf/01%20DOA...

Ericaj This article provides a guide for teachers to use. Also, it has questions that can be asked throughout the book. UDL 9.3 Develop self-assessment and reflection. ESOL strategy # 6 Continually monitor students‘ comprehension. Throughout each meeting, the teacher can check upon the students to see if they understand the book. #UCFLAE3414SP21 3y
Adodd1 This book would also be great for an IR with your students, while still using ESOL strategy number 6 to check for your students comprehension 3y
ztorres Diary of the wimpy kids is a great series and always good to have in the classroom. Especially those upper elementary students that can somewhat relate to the main character who just started middles school. Really good books! 3y
DrSpalding I agree wholeheartedly that this would make an excellent literature circle/book club option in your middle grade classroom. Your universal design and English learner strategies work beautifully. 3y

i just finished reading this book. some parts are about his reputation other parts just about what happened to him through his years as a “kid“ in school. personally my favourite part was when he threatened to call the cops, then the teens went all rage on trying to get Rowley and Greg.

I couldn‘t figure out how to copy and paste, so here‘s my Goodreads review. This book is not funny and I just don‘t get the appeal. I‘m usually a teacher who is happy whenever kids are reading, but if this is it, I‘m not so sure. I‘m hoping to find better options with more positive representation if I end up staying in 6th, as most of the class books I have are for 8th grade.

Overall it's cute enough and I can see why so many of my students over the years have been fond of it. Still, while Greg's inability to see his own missteps and learn from them might have been humorous and true to life, it impacts the satisfaction quotient. It was like having the silly humor of Calvin and Hobbes, with none of the depth which made Watterson brilliant. So, just fine.

I finally read it. And. Ok I see why my boys have read it so many times-the humor is spot on for them. As a mom, I wish Greg saw more direct consequences for treating his friend so poorly, but then I doubt kids would read it as much. #bbrc #middlegrade #readerschoice #bookspinbingo

SiameseCatsRead Read the first two books to my son, then bailed. My 6 year old wasn't into it. I know he's young...but they just weren't for us. 4y
Sarahreadstoomuch @kelly_anne I‘m not going to encourage them, but my boys discovered and loved these around 3rd-4th grade. The younger is going into 6th now, and he‘s rereading them. Again. I stole this from his library pile! 4y

SiameseCatsRead @Sarahreadstoomuch I agree that that's a better age group for the books. Most of the jokes went right over his head, or some of the words were objectionable in our house, so I kept having change words on the fly 😂 If he wants to read them in a few years, I would be ok with it. Lucky yours had them to steal from for bingo!!! 4y

I read this book to my library kids online. The kids love it but I am not a fan. It is just stupid humor and the main character is mean and lazy.

Powered_By_Plants My son loved these. I remember him talking about ‘the cheese touch‘ 😂 4y
LaurenMags It is a popular book with the kids at the library! They LOVE this kind of humor. The cheese touch has to be my favorite part of the whole book. That part is funny and I can see kids joking around about it. 🤣🤣 @Powered_By_Plants 4y
Powered_By_Plants They do!! We currently have a book on our shelf called ‘i need a new bum‘ 🙄🙈🙈 my 6 year old cant get enough . I must admit I was trying to encourage him to read something that would make him think but it comes with age though and has finally moved on from them 😂 4y
