The Book of Emma Reyes
The Book of Emma Reyes | EMMA. REYES
5 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
This astonishing memoir of a childhood lived in extreme poverty in Latin America was hailed as an instant classic when first published in Colombia in 2012, nine years after the death of its author, who was encouraged in her writing by Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez. Comprised of letters written over the course of thirty years, it describes in vivid, painterly detail the remarkable courage and limitless imagination of a young girl growing up with nothing. Emma was an illegitimate child, raised in a windowless room in Bogot? with no water or toilet and only ingenuity to keep her and her sister alive. Abandoned by their mother, she and her sister moved to a convent housing 150 orphan girls, where they washed pots, ironed and mended laundry, scrubbed floors, cleaned bathrooms, and sewed garments and decorative cloths for church. Illiterate and knowing nothing of the outside world, Emma escaped at age nineteen, eventually coming to have a career as an artist and to befriend the likes of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Far from self-pitying, the portrait that emerges from this clear-eyed account inspires awe at the stunning early life of a gifted writer whose talent remained hidden for far too long.

I found this book mesmerizing. Her memory, courage, and letter writing are phenomenal. I‘ve read the translation which is beautiful. I can only imagine how rich it must be in her native Spanish. Her writing is hypnotic and I‘m only now sad that she didn‘t write more.

I live in Windsor, Ontario Canada - not Texas... we flooded today. So these are my plans for tonight. My rigatoni pasta dinner, wine and reading. I can post pictures of some of our flooded streets. It hasn't stopped pouring rain since yesterday.

#TBRtemptation post 8! This short book is comprised of letters written over 30 years. It's an astonishing memoir showing a childhood in Bogotá's extreme poverty and her escape from it at 19 to become a painter, befriending the likes of the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Gabriel García Márquez encouraged her writing. As a result, this book became an instant Latin American classic in 2012 when posthumously published. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

tpixie Intriguing. And great cover! 7y
BookDame That sounds interesting. On another note, I think it would be fun to start a group that writes real letters to each other. Imagine a real pen pal! Or just me being corny. 7y
Zelma @BookDame there is a pen pal group on Litsy. It was put together recently, but I'm sure you could find interested people to start a second group. 7y
MrBook @BookDame That is interesting! With email and instant comms nowadays, many have forgotten that handwritten communications are still an option. @Zelma , you're so in the know 😁👏🏻! 7y
BookDame @Zelma thank you for the info! @MrBook there is something appealing about handwritten letters. 7y

I read this for a paid review -- it's excellent, heartbreaking and also heartening.. A childhood memoir by an artist who grew up poor and abandoned in 1920s and 30s Colombia.
